The world owes the Red Cross as the symbol of nursing to Monsieur Henri Dunant, a Swiss, who first pointed out the duty humanity owed to soldiers wounded in battle. Struck by the plight of the wounded at the Battle cf Solferino in 1859, Dunant brought out at his own cost a booklet in which he vividly described the terrible manner in which the wounded suffered. The book was translated into many languages, and led to a conference in 1863. In compliment to Monsieur Dunant this was held in Switzerland. Various resolutions as. to the humane conduct of future warfare were passed, and it was decided that th; Swiss ensign of a white cross on a red ground, reversed, should be the standard of the new humanity. Thus the Red Cross of Mercy came Into being. London spends more than £12,300,000 annually on education.
