SWIMMING.
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. VISITING SWIMMERS ARRIVE. As a preliminary to the national swimming championship meeting, which will bo opened to-morrow at the Municipal Baths, some 100 competing swimmers and their supporters arrived from the north by yesterday afternoon’s express. The senior members of the teams went to their va.ious hotels, and the juniors and intermediates, the majority of whom are to be billeted or will stay with friends, were met by their hosts. With the exception of W. Cameron, the record-breaking young intermediate, the Wellington swimmers have not arrived, buthev are expected this afternoon. The majority of these swimmers will compete only in championship events, but a number of others will also accompany the teams for the purpose of swimming in handicaps and as members of the water polo teams. To-morrow’s programme should prove especially interesting, including as it does the “ blue riband ” of the New Zealand swimming world—the 100 Yards Championship, in which such well-known cracks as Norman Dowsett (Wanganui), J. P. Farrell, J. Enright, W. C. Watson (Auckland) C. Claridge and D. Murrell (Wellington), and N H. Bailey (Otago) will be seen in action. With such a field, this race promises to be one of the closest and most* exciting contests seen here for many a day. Tlie Mile Championship should also be a big attraction, and in this race D. P. Lindsay (Canterbury), the New Zealand champion over the distance, who has already recorded some sensational tmies this season, will defend his title. With such flyers as Misses E. Stockley, D. Magee, D. Grant, and M. Jepson the 100 Yards Ladies’ Championship should also be a race worth watching KELLERMAN CUP. The following are the entries to date for the Annette Kellerman Cup contest, which will be swum off on Otago Harbour on Thursday morning next ; —W. G. Morpeth (Wellington), P. Champion, C. R.
