PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.

MEETING OF SOCIETY. At the monthly meeting of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held yesterday, there were present Sir George Fenwick, in the chan-, and Messrs A. D. Sutherland, S. P. Leith, J. Shepherd, and J. M'Gregor. The sub-committee appointed to consider the question of the dehorning of cattle submitted the following decision in the form of a recommendation“ That legislation be introduce 1 making it compulsory to dehorn cattle within two years of birth, but that stud cattle be exempt from dehorning.'’ The report was adopted without discussion. In bringing up the question of the proposed withdrawal from the North Otago district, the Chairman said that 88 subscribers wished the Otago society to continue, and 18 were of the opposite opinion. In view of the voting, he thought that the society should carry on, as it would not be doing its duty to North Otago subscribers if it withdrew. It was unanimously decided to continue the operations of the society in Nort Otago. , In reporting to the society on the results of animal welfare week, Mr J. A. Forbes, of Oaraaru, said that the effort had been satisfactory and encouraging. The receipts amounted to £6o‘2s Id, and there was a credit balance of £1 Is 7id m hand —The report was received. The Secretary of the Canterbury Society wrote asking the Otago Society if the practice of importing monkeys tor experimental work in the Otago University Medical School had been investigated. —The Secretary (Mr I S. Wilson) was instructed to reply stating that the Otago Society had investigated the position, and was satisfied with the facts presented to A further letter from the Canterbury Society asked the Otago Society to forward particulars of the manner of treating dogs injured in street accidents in Dunedin In Canterbury an effort was to be made to get the local authorities to hare some of the burden, and evidence as to what was being done in other centres was ’required.—The Secretary stated that he had replied promising the co-operation ot the Otago Society in the effort to t,ain fuller assistance from local bodies.
