GERMAN RACE DWINDLING
*" THE BIRTH RATE HALVEDDECREASE IN SCHOOL RETURNS. (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright ) LONDON, 1 ecember 14, The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Mail says: “That the German race is dwindling is the deduction to oe made from the school returns of the city, which show 353,000 pupils, compared with 700,000 before the war. The Ober burgomaster estimates chat the birth rate has been halved, principaly due to the housing shortage. Dr Alfred Grotjalm contends that there must be twenty births per 1000 to maintain the population. Prior to 1885 there were 37 to 40 and 46 per 1000 in the chief cities. There are now 14.2, and in Berlin 10 per 1000.”—A. and N.Z. Cable.
