A VIOLENT EXPLOSION.
LARGE WATER MAIN BURSTS. STARTLING OCCURRENCE IN HASTINGS. (Peb United Pbess Association.) NAPIER, December 14. A violent explosion about 7.30 to-night startled everybody within a radius of 300 or 400 yards of the Hastings municipal buildings. The noise had been caused by the bursting of a huge water main in Hastings street near the corner of Heretaunga street. Repairs are at present being carried out in that locality, and the road had been opened up for the purpose. The pipe that burst was a new one, and it had been tested to a 2001 b pressure and found to be in good condition. However, it burst, and with such violence that the buildings in the vicinity were shaken, and six panes of glass were cracked in a shop on the opposite side of Heretaunga street. Within a few minutes there were about two feet of water in the open drain, and one or two springs were bubbling through the plugs in various parts of the town. The borough water supply was completely turned off until a temporary supply wait diverted through another main.
