MUNICIPAL EXPENDITURE.

COSTING CLERIC APPOINTED. A WELLINGTON INNOVATION. (Special to Daily I'imes.) WELLINGTON, December 13. After a long and somewhat acrimonious debate the City Council, sitting as a Finance Committee, decided to advertise for a costing clerk or an accountant at a salary of £BOO a year. Although such au office has not been very much heard of in New Zealand, the Mayor (Mr G. A. Troup) and several of the members of the council are inclined to believe that if they arc successful in securing the right man for the task he will earn more than his salary for the city. He will keenly inquire not only into the prices of all material used by the council, but will make it his business to know what the work is costing on any job, what a service costs, and what a job costs. The figures relating to any given work will be brought under his notice, and if he finds that it is costing more per cubic yard than it should it will be his business to ascertain through the foreman the reason. This officer will be the council’s check on any looseness in expenditure on council works.
