LAWRENCE, November 29. THE WEATHER. The weather during the past week ha:, been very unseasonable —no semblance of summer time has been experienced, and everythin*? points to a late season. The weather has retarded shearing operations, the biggest station in the district having hud to postpone shearing to a later date. COLLIE DOG CLUB. The following balance sheet was submitted at th e annual meeting of the Tuapeka Collie Dog Club : —Receipts : Balance from last year, £22 7s; entries, £32 Ids ; sheep guessing, £5 ss; donations, £l2 Is 6d ; incidentals, £2 15s 3d; —total, £96 8o 9d. Expenditure: Prize?,. £4l,
specials, £7 16a 6d; account and salary, £2O los 9d. Credit balance. £26 IBs 6d. SALE OF WORK. A sale of work, conducted conjointly by the Presbyterian Bible class and Sunday school staff, on behalf of missions and innovations to the Sunday school, was held in th c Town Hall last Wednesday, and was a very successful function. ELECTRIC LIGHT. The reticulation of the district is about complete. Waitahuna district will hold file a witching-on ceremony on Thursday, when a special programme of events has been arranged to celebrate the occasion. The Beaumont district will be completely wired up in three weeks, and it is antici pated that by the end of the year the whole district will be enjoying the bene fits of electric light and power. FRUIT PROSPECTS. Although this part is not looked upon as a fruit-growing centre, very fine samples of apples, pears, plums are grown here—specimens that would compare with produce from other districts are exhibited. Even peaches and apricots of fine appearance and quality matured here last season. Pip fruit is making a fine show, and if the weather becomes more settled, a bountiful crop is assured. A number of residents are experimenting with strawberries, and so far signs are not wanting that their venture is going to be successful, and demonstrates that fruit culture can be successfully studied here under intelligent cultivation. FLOUD RELIEF FUND. The distribution of the flood relief fund under the committee was completed during the week, and .one pleasing feature was the action of the local committee in allocating the sum of £24 to the Chinese residents of the flooded area. The compensation to the residents who have suffered severely has been judiciously adm filtered, according to reports emanating from those who have received deserved relief. MINING. The Amalgamated Mining claims have been busy washing up during the last week, and. satisfactory returns have already been received. Two washings have realised 190 oz and 120 oz respectively, and the final wash up is expected to take place this week, when the aggregate amount of the clean-up is expected to reach about 700 oz MUNICIPAL MATTERS. At the Borough Council meeting on Monday night 12 applications wer e received for the position of town clerk and treasurer. Mr JB. S. Fulton, of Dunedin, was appointed to the position.
