THE MASSEY COLLEGE.
DEVELOPMENT WORK. SATISFACTORY PROGRESS REPORTED. (Per t kited Press Associat n.) PALMERSTON N., August 29. ‘ At a meeting of the Massey Agricultural College Council it was reported that a satisfactory start had been made on the organisation and development of the farm at Fitzherbert. Portion of the property had been laid off as a dairy farm and the erection of the necessary subdivisions! fences was in progress. A large area of pasture land had been harrowed and topdressed, and the ground for root and forage crops for cattle and sheep had been ploughed. Some four acres of land had been drained, and the benefits of this treatment were beginning to show. A flock of 900 ewes had been placed on the property two months ago, and lambing was now in full swing. The council had apoir' 1 Mr W. J. M' Culloch, formerly of the department of Agriculture at Palmerston North, as farm manager. Mr M’Culloch had been directing the operations for two months, and nad got together the nucleus of a permanent farm staff for the working of the property. The Public Works Department was pushing on the erection of the milking shed and the dairyman’s cottage, and was also putting in a sewerage system to serve the main buildings and the experimental dairy factory. Mr Yates, the recently-appointed registrar, had taken up his duties. The council was now going into the question of teaching staff accommodation, and hoped to be in a position next March to receive at least those students who had already commenced agricultural courses at Auckland and V ictoria University Colleges. Plans had been drawn up for a number of short courses on special subjects, but the existing accommodation was so limited that it was not possible to offer these courses for the time being.
