LAWN TENNIS.

TEAM INVITED TO AUSTRALIA. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, August 29. Lawn tennis players will remember Mr E. B. M'Kay, who was manager of the New South “Wales lawn tennis team in New Zealand last summer. He arrived by the Aorangi this morning on a private visit to the Dominion. When asked if it was likely that another team would be coming from New South Wales, Mr M'Kay said he was authorised by the president of the New South Wales Association to suggest to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association that a team from here would be welcome for a visit to both New South Wales and Victoria, and that arrangements might later be made for a combined team from those States to represent Australia in this Dominion. • “ If this suggestion should be agreed to,” added Mr M‘Kay, “ it would mean that New Zealanders would see some of the best of the Australian players who are now in form, such as Crawford, Kalms, and Willard, of New South Wales, and Patterson, Hawkes, and Schlesenger, of Victoria.” Some interesting comments were made by the visitor concerning the brilliant young player Crawford. ‘‘ He been very much to the fore of late,” said Mr M'Kay, “ and without doubt he is our hope for the Davis Cup. Although only 19 years of age, he has, during the past six months, won the New South Wales singles championship, the City of Sydney championship, and the Queensland championship—a notable performance for one so young. He is one of the results of the coaching methods adopted by the New South Wales Association to foster lawn tennis among the young players.” Replying to a question, the visitor said that Crawford is an all-round player, having what is proverbially termed ‘‘every shot in the locker.” Added to this, he has air excellent lawn tennis temperament, and is not likely to bo carried away by his successes. Mr M'Kay said that the players who were with the visiting team in New Zealand are all well. “ I have had the pleasure,” he addded, “of sending to some of my old friends here photographs of Dr North and Norman Peach, taken after they won the New South Wales doubles championship... The team members all sent their regards to the good friends they made in this Dominion.”

KAITUNA CLUB, The annual meeting of the Kaituna Lawn Tennis Club was held in the Went worth Tea Rooms last evening, and was attended by some 40 _ The president (Mr F. W. Parker) was in the chair. The President, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, congratulated the A grade team on its success during the past season. Not since 1918 had Kaituna been successful in reaching the top of the ladder in A Grade matches and they were very pleased indeed to be once again in that happy position, although it had to be remembered that on this occasion they were sharing the honour with the Moana Club. They had also to congratulate Dr A. S. Moody and Mr M. Cleghorn on their success in the Otago Lawn Tennis A Easter tournament. During the season the club had paid a bonus on balls and this had cost them some -37 or £B. On the whole, the balance sheet ■ ■as satisfactory. Last year the club had dis cussed the matter of A Grade matches. It' was thought that they vo ild have been able to avail themselves of the association’s courts at Logan Park this season, but the ground was not yet in a condition to lay down courts. Kaituna differed from other clubs in that only a limited number of its members played in matches. He thought they should ask the association to drop the A Grade matches for one season. This, he believed, would foster club interesta, and next season Logan Park would be in a fit condition for play. They were greatly pleased to see that Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P.. was likely to succeed in getting the Summer 'time Bill through the House this session, and he thought the Kaituna Club should be the first to congratulate him should he succeed in doing so.—(Applause.) , , =Mr W. R. Sinclair seconded the motion. So far as finance was concerned he thought the committee had treated players well, and he hoped that whatever concession they had had during the past season would be continued during the incoming one. Mr S. Angel supported the motion. ,He thought that some reference should have been made in the annual report to the honour which the club had gained through two of its members —Dr Moody and Mr Cleghorn—having been privileged to play with the Duke of York during his visit to Dunedin. In reply to Mr Angel, the President said that’ balls had cost the club £5 more in 1926 than they had done in the previous year. The motion for the adoption of the report and balance sheet was carried. The election of officers resulted as follows President, Mr F. W. Parker (reelected); vice-presidents Messra M. IFyfe and M. Anderson, Drs Moody and Jenkins, and Messrs W. B. Sinclair, S. Angel, G. Clark, Brabant, and J. C. Anderson; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. F. Phillipps (re-elected); auditor, Mr L. J. M'Millan; committee—Misses D. M’Hutcheson, E. Calder, M. Meenan, and Messrs H. Pollock, H- C. M'Queen, L. J. M'Millan, and G. M. Cleghorn; delegates to the Otago Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs R- F. Phillipps and 6. Clark; coach, Mr M. Cleghorn (re-elected). It was decided that the opening day should be Saturday, September 17. On the motion of Mr Sinclair, seconded by Mr J. C. Anderson, it was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Otago Lawn Tennis Association that the A Grade competition be suspended for the season, and that attention be concentrated on the ladder competition. On the motion of Miss M'Hutcheson, seconded by Mr H. C. M'Queen, it was resolved that it be a recommendation to the association that the matches to be played be spread over the whole season. Miss M'Hutcheson moved that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee that no B Grade team he entered for the competition. This was seconded by Miss M'Carthy, and on being put to the meeting was lost by an overwhelming majority. ‘On the conclusion of the business, members wore entertained at a social.
