ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

F.A. TROPHY COMPETITION. One of the series of interprovincial matches for the handsome trophy presented to the Dominion by the English Football Association will be played at Carisbrook on Saturday next, when Auckland, the present holders, will meet the Otago representatives. The F.A. Trophy competition is now the major provincial one in Association football, and is played for between Auckland. Wellington, Ct.--erbury, and Otago, on precisely similar lines to the Plunket Shield contests in cricket. Two matches of the series have so far been played. Wellington in each case having been defeated by Auckland and then by Otago, so that Saturday’s match will have a direct bearing on the ultimate destiny cf the cup. The present visit of the Auckland team is the first for many years past, and with the game on a solid footing in the northern city, the standard of their football is very high. Otago, in their recent game against Wellington, gave a very bright display, which greatly pleased the Wellington spec- c tators of the match, which was regarded ■ as. better than either of the Canadian' games played in the Capital City. Local spectators are therefore assured of a bright spectacular game, and as Saturday is an. off day, a large crowd is expected to witness the game A curtain-raiser will bo played between the probable school boys , team (which is to play the Australian school boys on September 14) and the Southern' Fifth Grade team. The Otago team will be picked from tha following;—Goal, Wills or Caskie. Backs, Anderson, Scouler. Halves. —Cooper, Berry,Munsie. Forwards.—Simmonds, M'Hugh, Hooper, M'Cormack, M’Lean. Reserves., Munro and Ehmcan. ' Trainers, T. M’Cormack and J. Hunter.

OTAGO FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION., MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. r The weekly meeting of the management ‘ committee, of the Otago Football Asso* ciation was held last evening, Mr J. B. ' M’Callum being in the chair. - CORRESPONDENCE. : Replying to the association's request for a half-holiday for the schools on the oeca- r sion of the visit of the Australian school-' boys on September 14, the Secretary of‘ the Otago Education Board advised that"' that body Could not see its way to agree , to the request, owing to the fact that the -■> schools would have taken up only on the? , previous day after their vacation, but suggested that the headmasters might allow, the scholars , off earlier to witness the match.—The Secretary of the association' . stated that he had communicated with the ; headmasters, and diis action was approved. The Secretary of the Canterbury Foot- : - ball Association advised that it was pro- '’ posed to form a South Island Primary • Schools’ Association, and a meeting of * delegates would be held at Christchurch on .Tuesday, August 30, and asked that a. , delegate be sent to represent Otago.—Tt,,. was decided to advise Canterbury that the Otago Assoication was in hearty accord . with the proposal, and that the proposed rules also met with its approval. It was found impossible, however, to send a delegate from Dunedin, but an effort ‘ would be made to get Mr Frank Bennett, of Christchurch, to represent the Otago ,■ Association. Mr R. Harrison, selector for the New Zealand schoolboy test team to play the Australian schoolboys on September 3 at.,, Auckland, asked that two of the best boys _ from Otago be sent tip on Thursday morning next.—The Secretary advised that lie had got into touch with Mr MTnnes, who ■ informed him that no boys were available • from the Technical School teams, as theyv: were over agc> or from the Otago High School, as a team from the latter had arranged a tour in Canterbury. In any , case, Mr MTnnes had stated that the time ’ ■ allowed was far too short to arrange matters. —The position as stated was by the committee, and on the suggestion of Mr A. N. Smith, it was decided to for- ‘ ward a letter of protest' to the New Zealand Council that the late receipt of ad- ■ vice gave the local body little opportunity-'-of being represented. GENERAL.
