SHANGHAI, May 2 A Labour Day meeting carried a resolution to cable to Mr Ramsay MacDonald protesting against British ’planes flying daily over Chinese territory, thus imperilling Chinese sovereignty, and demanding the withdrawal of the British troops, as the Nationalists’ establishment of law and order at Shanghai made their further presence unnecessary, but mei’ely oppressive and provocative.—Sydney Sun Cable. SITUATION ON THE YANGTSE. WARSHIPS WILL RETALIATE. LONDON, May 2. In the House of Commons, Sir Austen Chamberlain, in reply to questions, said that discussions were continuing among the Powers in reference to the events at Nanking and Mr Cheng’s Note. Ho would make a statement on the subject as soon as he could. A questioner was informed that his Majesty’s ships on the Yangtse had been authorised to return the tiring against them. Sir Austen Chamberlain said that he had communicated with the Japanese and the United States Governments, and he did not think that further co-operation was obtainable by means of a conference aiming at the formulation of a common policy in the Pacific and Far East.— A.P.A. an\d Sun Cable.
