CHARGE OF BLACKMAIL
NINE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. (free* Aasociatlon—By Telapraph—Copyright. LONDON, May 2. (Received May 3, at 7.45 p.m.) Isaac Milcher, charged with attempting to blackmail Harold Rubin, a wealthy pearl dealer, was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. The defence acknowledged Rubin’s magnanimity, emphasised his Honor, and said his character had never been assailed. —A. and N.Z. Cable. At the Old Bailey, on April 27, Melcher (aged 54) waa charged with attempting to blackmail Rubin. The evidence showed that Rubin’s father acquired a fortune from the Western Australian pearl trade. Melcher was sent to Shark’s Bay to buy pearls, and lived there seven years ; then his health broke down. The prosecution alleged that Melcher threatened to disclose that Rubin was paying secret commissions, and thus ruin his political career. It was also alleged that Melcher retained papers appertaining to Rubin’s business. Rubin denied all the allegations.
