DUNEDIN SHAKESPEARE CLUB

At His Majesty’s Theatre to-morrow evening the Dunedin Shakespeare Club will give the second reading of its fiftieth year when <jr nio Two Gentlemen of Verona” will ho presented. As this play has not previously been read by the club the occasion should bo of special interest. The play belongs to Shakespeare 6 youthful period, and in it. as might bo expected, the young people have it all their own way, eloping, assuming equivocal disguises, carrj ing off other people’s daughters, and becoming captains of robbers on short notice, with all the ease and carelessness that irresponsible youth displays. Iho nlav is comparatively lacking in characterisation, but the action . develops early and naturally. Students will bo interested in noting scenes, incidents, images, and situations which the poet used again in later plays with magnificent effect. iho poetry o'f this play is, perhaps, not so often quoted as thoso of the later and greater works, but ‘‘The Uncertain Glorv of an April Day,” ‘‘A Woman’s the proverb “Make a virtue of necessity, ami the lyric “Who is Silvia ” are well known. The chorus. Miss F. emmnor will sing this lyric during the course of the action of the play, and her singing, with that of Mr A. Dungloy. during the interval, should add considerably to the evening’s enjoyment.
