CLOTHES AND THE MAN
PORTRAITS AT THE ACADEMY. SARTORIAL JOURNAL’S COMPLAINT (Fret? Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, April 29. (Received May 1, at 5.5 p.m.) The Tailor and Cutter has decided that Mr G. li. Shaw’s portrait was probably banned by the Academy because of the atrocious clothes “which painters seem to introduce into all pictures nowadays.” Thereupon it proceeds to bemoan the creases and contortions in clothes, “which make the judicious mourn.” Taking the subjects one by one it discovers buttonholes not corresponding with buttons, monstrous collars and appalling ties. For example, “John Fleming wears buckskin strappings in his riding breeches. On the right leg the strapping- is placed correctly ; but incredible to relate the left leg strapping is pointed outside. Horrors! It is the worst mistake ever seen in the Academy. Take Lord Green way Ther is small advantage in being a peer if one is not allowed buttonholes in one’s clothes.”—A. and N.Z. Cable.
