THE RETIRING MAYOR.
lx may be confidently anticipated that rery wide support will be given to a movement which was initiated yesterday with the object of providing that some tangible expression shall be ,j offered to Mr Tapley of the appreciation ! by the emptnunity of the services rendered by him in a mayoral capacity during the past four years. There may be no precedent for the course that is proposed, but, if it is necessary to create a precedent for making public recognition of an efficient performance of the duties that pertain to the position of first citizen, the occasion is fittingly furnished m the retirement of Mr Tapley from office after four years of strenuous and devoted service. On ail sides it is freely acknowledged that Mr Tapley has not only earned credit fur himself but brought credit also upon Dunedin by the happy manner in which the multifarious activities, associated with the mayoralty have been discharged by him during a period that was crowded with events of the highest importance and of unusual variety. It is specially gratifying to note that the promoters of the testimonial have named a modest figure as the maximum amount of subscription that is desired. The opportunity will, therefore, be afforded to all classes oi citizens to participate in the proposed presentation. It will be much more gratifying to Mr Tapley, wo are sure, if the public recognition of his mayoral term represents the contributions of a large number of subscribers of small amounts than if it represented substantial subscriptions from a limited circle of people. ■
