TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was presided over by Or J. W. Blair {chairman), there being also present Crs Walter Blackie, D. MTntosh, T. Carruthers, R. A. Kempshell, F. Doherty, and A. Scott. The Finance Committee recommended that accounts totalling £1302 16a 2d be passed for payment. The bank book showed a debit balance of £344 8s Bd.—Received, The Inspector of Works reported lor the month as follows: — East Taieri Riding.—General surface work has been carried out in this riding, and the following roads have been surfaced: —Riverside, Shands, Gladstone, Owhiro-Gladtield, also Tweed and Clyde streets, Mosgiel Junction; 25 yards of gravel from the Silverstream dump has been spread on Gladstone road. The main highway from Cullen’s to Green Island has been surfaced with the small 'grader. North Taieri Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced: —Gladstone, Halfway Bush to Whare Flat, and Wingatui. The arched culvert on Duke’s road has been cleaned out. Kaikorai Riding.—The new metal on the Green Island Bush road has been blinded, and 50 yards of metal spread on the Black Head road. The Green Island to Taieri Mouth road has been surfaced, also the main highway from Green Island to Coach and Horses. Otokia Riding.—Maintenance metal has been run out on Grey street, Allanton, and also on Station road, Otokia. -The footpath from the Jubilee coal pit to the main road has been surfaced, and water-tables on the roadway have been cleaned. The old creamery and Green Island to Taieri Mouth roads have been surfaced and the slip on ‘lntosh’s road removed. Under flood damage and Government grant the work on the bridges at Leitch'e and Marshall’s, and also the concrete culvert at MTvor’s, have been completed, with the exception of the approaches, the filling up of which will be finished by the end of the month. The main highway has been surfaced from Allanton to Otokia.

Outran) Riding.—One hundred and seventy yards of maintenance gravel from Cameron’s Taieri river dump has been run out on the Outran) to Allanton and the Allanton to Berwick roads. The following roads have been surfaced:—D. Millar’s, Allanton to Rock and Pillar, Hackett’s, Loan, Granton, and the Outram to Hindon.

Mauugatua Riding.—The following roada have been surfaced:—Lee Canal, Bell’s, Sparks, Outratn to Berwick, Henley to Berwick, and Otokia to Maungatua; 25 yards of maintenance gravel has been run out on Berwick Hill, and 75 yards on Reid’s road, this being taken from the dump on Reid’s property at the contour channel. Messrs Reid Bros, and Mrs M'Leod grunted permission to have this gravei carted through their properties on to the Outram to Berwick road. Owing to the wet weather at the beginning or the month we were unable to get through the paddocks with the motor lorry. On the hill the main highway has been surfaced from Outram to Whare Creek, and 60 chains of the clay portion from the top of the Whare Hill past Traquair Station to the Lee has been metalled with schist spalls from the Whare Creek quarry. This will be of great benefit to the settlers in this district during the winter. Deep Stream Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced:—Young’s, School, Outram to Hindon, Hindon to Lee, Mount John and Lamb Hill. The main highway has been surfaced and graded from Lee Stream to Sutton.

Strath Taieri Riding.—The grading of the following road has been completed:— Robertslea, Top road from Brown’s corner to John Milne’s and Newman’s property, Messrs Milne and Newman paying half of the cost of this work. The grading of Dry Ridge road from Glover’s to Heffernan’a is in progress. The metalling on the Hummock Runs road has also Been completed. This road has been surfaced from Bald Hill road to Mr John Kerr’s property. The Sanitary Inspector reported favourably on the slaughterhouses in the county, the piggeries at Green Island Bush and Saddle Hill, and the boilingdown works at Burnside.—Received.^ The Ranger reported on a visit to Brighton regarding parking of motor cow and speeding, also in regard to people congregating on the Brighton bridge.—Received. CORRESPONDENCE. The Engineer-in-chief, Public Works Department, forwarded a copy of consolidated and amended motor lorry regulations taking effect as from April I, 1927. —Received. Letters were read from the chairman No. 17 District Highways Council, enclosing Main Highways Board circular respecting grazing rights on public roads and in reference to the renewal of culverts.—Received. The District Highways Council. No. 17, asked to be advised at an early date if the council desired to submit any recommendations for the declarations of any public highways within the county as main highways. The next meeting of the council would be held on May 26. —Cr MTntosh suggested that the claim for Brighton-Taieri Mouth road be renewed.— Suggestion adopted.—Cr Carruthers asked that the road from Middlemarch towards Kyeburn be declared a main road. The Maniototo County was moving in that direction, and the two counties should act together.—Resolved not to press the claim in the meantime. The District Highways Council, No. 17, advised that it had been decided to hold a conference of local body representatives at Christchurch on May 18 to discuss proposals for reducing the large balance to the credit of the main hignways revenue account.—Cr Blackie and the clerk to attend to the matter. Cr Blackie and the Clerk reported on the conference of local bodies in regard to the better roads scheme. —Cr MTntosh objected to the loan being raised without the consent of the ratepayers.—A general discussion took place, in which the bulk of the councillors favoured the scheme, without asking the consent of the ratepayers.—The Chariman moved, and Cr Scott seconded, that Cr Blackie bo empowered to inform the conference at Christchurch that Taieri County Council favoured the scheme being initiated without a vote being taken of the ratepayers.—Carried; Cr MTntosh asking that his vote be recorded against the motion, A. J. Spencer (Berwick) pointed out the necessity for repairs to the road leading into his property.—To be attended to. The Dunedin-Wanaka Motors (Ltd.) applied for permission to increase the speed 50 per cent., as provided by paragraph 6, clause (b) of the regulations.— Declined. The Town Clerk, Green Island, drew attention to the drain on Brighton road, asking that it be cleaned through Callaghan’s and Johnston’s.—Settlers to be asked to clean the ditch.

J. 13, Kirkland (Fairfield) wrote regarding some more gravelling required at his gate.—To be attended to. Nelson M'Coll Brighton, applied for some gravel to be spread on the road to his place; in wet weather the road was impassable.—Engineer to attend to matter. L. S. Dyer asked permission to lay a 2in iron pipe from his factory, HuntlyBorwick road, to the river at the power house.—Permission granted to lay it along the road, subject to tho River Trust granting permission to put it through the river bank.

Robert Kidd, Sutton, wrote regarding the road to his place, and the need for a road direction sign at the Sutton school corner.—Sign post to be erected: no objection to the applicant filling the pot-holes on the road further on. F. R. Tucker. Gladbrook, applied for the gravelling of IS chain* of M’Hardy'a road near his place.—Hold over meantime. GENERAL. A return was placed before the council showing tho number of motor vehicles registered in Highways No. 17 district:— Cars, 6412; one-ton trucks. 892; two-lou trucks, 188; three-ton trucks, 62; fourton trucks, 51; a_ small number of sundry other motor vehicles and motor cycles, 2104. Building permits wore applied for as follows; —(a) W. Winthrup, Green Isand, at Green Island Bush; (b) Geddoa Bros., Green Island, cottage at Brighton; (o) J. C. Hooper, Saddle Hill, extending dwelling.—All granted Tho Secretary of tho Middlomarcli Farmers’ Union recommended the council to undertake tho following works: —(a) Bridge over Clark’s Creek; (b) remove pro ■-I.tig stock cards and gravel Farm road; (c) note dangerous condition of bridge neat tho cemetery. —(a) Noted for list of applica lions for Government grant, (b) clerk to interview board on the matter, (d) already attended to.
