WELLINGTON, January 24, Tho Wellington Gup meeting was concluded in fine weather, and there was a largo attendance for a non-holiday date. The track was harder than earlier in the meeting and supplied fast going. Tho racing was again very interesting. Assurance had the assistance of an experienced rider, and won, but was lucky to beat Stormy. Gold Mint was very unlucky in the Melrose Handicap. He is, however, hampered by being a bit slow on his legs at the rise of the barrier. Centrepiece again showed winning form in the Summer Handicap, in which First Aero ran a very good race. The Hawk and Grand Knight also shaped well under big weights, but Reremoana was badly placed from tho outset. Hynanna ran a good race in the Wellington Cup, and backers who, no doubt, worked on a process of elimination, made him a good favourite. Hynanna won well, and gave nothing a chance with him at the finish. Shirley looked very dangerous halfway up the straight in the Telegraph Handicap, and in the City Handicap was meeting Booster on lllb better terms. Tho weights told a talc, and Shirley won comfortably. Bank Note drew 15 at tho barrier in the concluding event on the programme. She was with the leaders at tho distance, however, but she tired, and Crown Area, staying on well, beat the Irish-bred horse, Aston, by a good length. _ Rosonor was sore before tho race and did not show up in tho straight. A lot of money came for Vesperus towards the close of the betting on the Wallacevillo High-Weight Handicap, in which he finished up a good favourite. Vesperus was runnings up with tho loaders when aporoaching the five-furlong post, but got sent'back last. Oriflam** led Capitulation into the straight, where Wedding March drew up and beat Capitulation by a short head, and Oriflamb dropped. Vesperus. coming through on the rails under punishment, finished a short length away third, and with a better run the favourite must have won. No Favours was close up and Son o’ Mine next. Bennanee appeared to be getting a bad passage when the field travelled along the back. Stormy was sent out a good favourite for the Kelburn Handicap, but he completely settled his chance by stumbling badly at the rise of the barrier. Assurance was slow on his legs in the early part, and, running second last at the far turn, from that stage he commenced to move up and, catching Kilmiss at the distance, beat her home by a short neck. The first two came away from the others, and outfit was over four lengths away third. Stormy made up a lot of ground and finished fourth. He must have won if the mishap had not occurred at the start. High Finance and Melissa were the only runners in the Hopeful Stakes Handicap, but when it came to business the Paper Money filly Silver Coot came clean away and won by over four lengths from Melissa. Laity was a neck away third, and then came High Finance, Chips, and Priceless. Horomea finished favourite for the Melrose Handicap, but carried very little more than Gold Mint and Battle Colours. The two last-named were a bit slow to move. Hymill was smartest out and led along the back and on to the straight. Hymill and Starboard Light led in to the straight from Black Mint, and Crossbow got sent back Black Mint was beating Hymill when Gold Mint put in his claim. In a good finish Black Mint beat Gold Mint by a head. Hymill was a long neck away third, and then came Mister Gamp, Starboard Light, and Battle Colours. Gold Mint got a bad tun, and this cost him a really good chance of a win. Battle Colours was in trouble at the distance, and seems to be getting too much racing. Serolina was well up in the early stages, but failed to stay on. Grand Knight and Reremoana went out practically even favourites for the Summer Handicap, and carried about 500 more tickets tnan The Hawk. Inferno kicked the Green when the latter went behind him and was going round him to mount. Green, after a brief delay, got in the saddle. The Hawk was the first to show, but Deluge led Rascal and Centrepiece along the back, where Reremoana had dropped back last. Deluge and Rascal led Centrepiece, Grand Knight, First Acre, Penman, and The Hawk into the straight. Centrepiece got to the front about the distance, and, stalling off challenges, won by half a head from First Acre, who beat Grand Knight by half a length. The Hawk was two lengths away fourth, and Inferno next. Rapine was struck out of the Consolation Handicap and Hynanna finished about 600 a better favourite than Civility. Clarinda and Front Rank were in demand. They got away to a good line from Civility and Clarinda, who were smartest out, and some crowding took place when making for the first turn. Front Rank, however, was in charge at the mile-post from Civility, Mandane, and Clarinda. Front Rank led along the back, where Hynanna dropped back last. Rounding the top Front Rank was attended by Mandane, Alloway, Civility, and Clarinda. Front Rank, Mandane, and Alloway turned into tho straight together. _ Hynanna _ then loomed up on the outside, and Civility came through on the rails. Hynanna came on and beat Civility by a length and a-half. Clarinda finished two lengths away, and Perle de Leon was next. Hynanna ran a good race in the Wellington Cup, in which he was one of the last out of the straight, and then finally finished close up, with Footfall behind the placed lot. Shirley was elected a good favourite for the City Handicap, and she justified the confidence by winning in good stylo. The favourite, with Corn Money and Booster, led High Pitch to the straight. _ Corn Money was in charge at the false rail, but Shirley came on and won nicely by a length. Booster finished half a length i away, with Corn Money, Receipt, and High Pitch next. Bank Note was sent out favourite in a i good betting race on the Kaitoke Handi- i cap. Dimmer, Lady Ideal, Bank Note, i and Sagittarius were first to show out, and ' they led the way to the straight. Inside | i the'distance Crown Area came on and beat Aston by a length. Orazono was another; short length away third, and then, in close ; order, came Bank Note Kilmezzo, Dim- j mer, and Sagittarius. 1 The meeting was very successful from 1 start to finish, and the only blot was sup- < plied by the fact that some of the running ! 1 escaped a challenge. D. C. Watt was sns- i ponded for a month for crossing in a race, I * and F. E. Jones received a censure for; < crowding when he won on Centrepiece during tho second day of the meeting. An < outstanding feature of the meeting wa.s the verv successful manner in which Mr 0. j O’Connor controlled his fields when at the ; J barrier. i '
