The track at Forbury Park bore a busy appearance yesterday morning, over 30 horses being worked, including several from southern and northern stables. Golden Devon worked well without the straps, and was anxious to increase the pace. The West Coast pacer is at the top of his form. G. Hadfield had angle Bingen, Some Wilkes, Mirella, and Miss Bingen on the track, but did not ask anything serious from any of them. Advice has been received that Nelson Derby has gone very lame, and it is doubtful if he will be brought south for the Forbury meeting. Patch of Hazel was spun out over a few rounds by G. Wallace, but the Dun-edin-owned pacer did not impress as a likely winner at this week’s meeting. Bonnette showed speed over three circuits, but put In one bad break the pressure was on. She will be ridden in her race on Thursday by O. Reed, who will also be on Mountain Chimes in the Electric. M. Campbell worked a Cello Sydney Wilkes two-year-old that moved attractively in easy pacing. Among others on the track during the morning were Spring Note, Tommy Direct, Mac’s Lady, Wallace Mac, Tennessee’s Child, Cocoa, Logan Park, Mountain Chimes, and Malice. Vera’s Doll is particularly well (says the Christchurch Sun), and will go to Dunedin to fulfil her engagements at Forbury. It is said that there was so much money in Dunedin on Saturday for Vesperus (winner of the Douro Cup at Wellington) that the S.P. merchants declined to take all on offer. When taken out to do his preliminary for the Anniversary Handicap at Wellington, Inferno tried to bolt, but he did not bet far before his rider got control of him. Just before the start of the race he got away and bolted two miles and a-half. He was lined up to the barrier, and then capped all by refusing to go at all. W. Brown, the rider of Rapier in the Wellington Cup, has a good record in big handicaps. ?Ie was on Comic Song when the Dunedin-owned horse won his first Stewards’ Handicap. The six-year-old gelding Carpenter, by Sunny Lake—Grand Rain, dropped dead on the road at West Melton last Wednesday when his owner, Mr P. F. Campbell, of Christchurch, was bringing him to Rio carton after a holiday in the paddock. Tripod, a recent pony race winner on a Sydney course, is by Surveyor. Windbag is stanefing up to his work at Randwick in such style as to engender hopes that_ he will be in a position to reproduce his best, form when the autumn Meetings come round. Up to date Windbag has won stakes to the value of £35,542, which gives him third place on the list of Australian winners. Some very fine stakes are provided for jumping events in France. A hurdle race to be decided this year at Nice is worth 500,000 francs. The best young hurdler seen on the French turf last year was tho three-year-old Diplomate, a son of the English-bred horse Jaeger, and he is looked upon to make further history as he ages.
