AN IMPUDENT BURGLAR.
IDENTITY ESTABLISHED. WRECKING OF AUCKLAND SHOP. (Special to Daua Times.; AUCKLAND, January 24. The identity of the burglar who carried out his threat to wreck a shop at Parnell if he found no money on his second visit, was cleared up in the Police Court, when Charles Octayiau Orlando Giorgi, alias Maurice Collins, aged 20, appeared in answer to a variety of charges. Accused pleaded guilty to four charges of breaking and entering shops and stealing goods of a total value of £8 3s lOd, to one charge of breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime, and another charge of attempting ,lo break and enter. He also admitted the theft of a bag, a rug, and failing to observe the terms of his release on probation Herbert Anderson, fruiterer, said that on the morning of January 12 he found that his shop had been entered during the night, and stock strewn about the door. The windows had been scratched, apparently with a glass cutter. A leather bag, a fountain pen, and goods valued at £3 3s 6d were missing. A note was found in the shop stating: “If there is no money here next time I will wreck the shop.” The next day witness found the shop had again been entered, and a repetition of the first night’s damage had taken place. James Clarke, manager Auckland Meat Company’s shop, at Mount Albert, said he reached the shop at 5.20 a.m. on January 15. He found that the contents of the shop had been disturbed, the till opened, and 8s 8d stolen. The safe had been moved about 20ft. Witness locked the shop, and went to a telephone cabinet. On returning he went through the shop, and saw accused trying to get in through a back window. Accused ran, and witness gave chase and, with the assistance of another man, caught him. Accused asked to be allowed to go, as he was out of work and “up against it.” Evidence was given by other witnesses that other premises at Mount Albert had been broken into on the bight of January 14. Detective M'Whirter produced a statement in which accused admitted the offences. On pleading guilty, the accused was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence.
