A CUSTOMS RIDDLE.

IMPORTATION OF CHEMICALS. HOSPITAL BOARD’S POSITION. (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH. December 22. “In regard to the importation of chemicals and scientific apparatus, the Christchurch Hospital is at a disadvantage compared with all the educational institutions of this country.” This paragraph was contained in a letter from Dr R. R. D. Milligan, of the Christchurch Hospital, to the meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board to-day as the basis of a remit to the coming conference of the Hospital Boards Association. The board decided to forward a remit to the conference, together with Dr Milligan’s letter. “At present,” stated the doctor, we are charged a Customs duty of 30 per cent, on organic chemical substances. On the other hand various chemicals, such as gold chloride and ferrous sulphide, are admitted duty free.. This is a riddle which only Customs people can read.”
