FRANCE AND ITALY
MOVEMENTS OP WARSHIPS. LONDON, December 3. French naval movements are considered highly significant in view of the present relations between France and Italy. All the best ships in the English Channel have been ordered to join the Mediterranean fleet (says the Paris correspondent of the Daily News), which shortly will be doubled in strength by the arrival of the squadron hitherto stationed at Brest. Special precautions have been taken at Toulon, Ajaccio, Bizerta, and elsewhere against a surprise attack. Vice-admiral Violetto, commanding the French Mediterranean fleet, will in January have six dreadnoughts, a squadron of the new 8000-ton 34-knot cruisers, 40 destroyers, and a strong flotilla of submarines. This force will bo considerably more powerful than the Italian fleet, though the latter is superior in aircraft.
