January 3, 4.—Southland R.C. Despite the unseasonable weather the horses at Wingatui are training on in anticipation of the summer meeting. The recent continuous rains have rendered the tracks sodden and heavy, and local trainers have found the task of giving their charges sufficient exercise an arduous one. However, the promising conditions d the last few days and a rapidly drying course have led to the hope that more serious work may bo undertaken during the coming week. The horses are all in good condition and a firm course would give trainers the choice of hardening them up for the Christmas meetings. Overcoming tho conditions prevailing, there has, however, been some fast work done, but before anything indicating form can be gathered the course will havo to dry considerably The Invercargill trainer, L. Smith, has the old pacer, IVlarvindale, working on tho S.R.C.’s tracks. The death is announced of Mr H. Munro Clarke, for many years assistant secretary to the Auckland Trotting Club. The Solferino marc, Francaise (says Sir Modred in the Southland Times), might, easily be classed as one of the most forward of F. J. M‘Kay’s string owned by Mr AV. T. Hazlew. Tho Southland gelding, Highburn, who was galloping in good company on Tuesday morning with Baldowa, is getting on with his jumping education. The All Red gelding (says Sir Modred in the Southland Times) may make his first appearance as a batten-crosse" in the New Year Hurdle race at the Wyndham E.C.’s annual fixture. . . . Deucalion suffered a minor mjuory vhile running in the paddock a couple of days ago, and has been out of commission sirce. However, the trouble does not appear to be serious, and he is expected to join the active members this week. Valicare, Rampion, and Pantheon are again working at Randwick. The lastnamed two are none the worse for their trip to Melbourne, but Valicare shows the mark of light blistering on her near quarter. Writing in the Waikato Times, “Martian” remarks: “Mosaic was saddled up for only one engagement at the _ Takapuna meeting. That was in tho principal handicap on tho second day, for which the little Some Boy ll—Marble Star horse was installed third favourite. Mosaic was not well served at the start and was hurried into a handy position early in the running, but the effort could not be sustained. With an even hop out Mosaic would have done better than fifth at the post.” According to the Christchurch Press. Rapier has made great, strides since the New Zealand Cup meeting, and the best, has yet to bo seen of tho brilliant Greyspear horse. Ho registered a good per- . formanco at Riccarton on Tuesday morning bv having a slight advantage over Fresco after galloping seven furlongs in Imin 32 3-ssec, with Beau Geste well beaten off. His movements for the holiday meetings will bo decided later. Fresco will most likely be sent south at Christmas, as a difficulty presents itself in securing a suitable horseman for the Manawatu fixture. Footfall has gone on well in his preparation since the C.J.C. meeting, at which he showed very consistent form, and he should be in the best of order for his Auckland engagements. Ho is favourably treated in the Auckland Cup with 7.7., and he should run a good race provided ho can see the journey out. There is no definite line on this point as he has never been seriously tried over long distances, but his breeding linos are favourable for a stayer. It is by no means certain that he will be running in the Auckland Cup as be has been nominated for a minor event on the first day, but he only requires average luck to pay his way on the trip. At Riccarton on Saturday Footfall was given a rousing gallop over a mile and a-half. He worked alone for a mile, where a companion joined in Mid completed the journey with him., "The first 10 furlongs were run in 2mm 14seo. The Hastings trainer, H. S. Greene, who generally has a large string of horses under his care, is at present not experiencing the best of luck. Two of his charges, Malatour and Pleasant Surprise are in a very had way (says the 1 nbunc), and on appearance Malatour may never race again. The General Latent—March gelding has been a good stake earner at the small meetings, (jut his days of usefulness would seem to he now over. The Mountain Knight—Kiltoss gelding Pleasant Surprise has shown promise as a jumper, and it i« unfortunate for his connections that he should be on the sick list at the present time. Suffering from a severe wound on the foreleg, which has filled badly, it looks as though some _ considerable time will elapse before he is fit to face the starter. SOUTH CANTERBURY RACES. SUMMER MEETING OPENED. FRONT RANK WINS CHIEF EVENT. ( (From Our Special Reporter.) TTMARU, December 10 Tho South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting was opened in fine but oppressively warm weather,' fortunately tempered with a mild breeze. There was a fairly good attendance, including patrons from Christchurch to Invercargill and intermediate parts of the map. Tho track was in excellent order after tho recent rains, and the card provided some very interesting racing and several close and exciting finishes. Dubious completely outclassed the opposition ho met m the < haio Hurdles. Ho gave a good exhibition of hurdling and gained lengths when going at the hurdle with Guncase and King Abbey. The lastnamed has had experience over the fences, and this has not assisted to make him smart over the small sticks. When Kaikahu unshipped A. E. Ellis he clung to the reins and had the bad luck to break his left leg above tho ankle and severely strain tho other ankle. Iho misfortune is accentuated by the fact that he was attending the meeting on a honeymoon trip, and would also be in big request for his /services in the saddle during the busy period represented by the summer meetings held at Christmas and New Year. ~ It is a rather remarkable fact that Money Peer Violet H, and Tholomon, tho three best backed horses in the Spring Stakes, got badly away, and had their chance wrecked at the start. 3 holomon looked to bo hopelessly out of it three furlongs from homo. but. he drew up and cut Lady Dilatory out. of second place. Tho straggling start appeared to cost Tholomon a good chance, of a win. The Teschemaker Handicap was a good betting race between Rapier, Battlement, Pink Terrace, and Front Rank, but the rest of tho field carried comparatively very little support. Set Sad set a hot pace after leaving the straight, and was still m charge as they raced to the home turn, where the southern mare ran wide, Sho was, however, still m front at the distance, but had run herself out, and Front Rank had her well beaten when Rapier came with a good run. Front Rank finished a neck in front of Rapier, on whom J. Beale dropped his hands a couple of strides from the post. Front Rank had to race Iho last five furlongs with her bit on her check. She- got it out of her mouth when her rider endeavoured to prevent her from racing with Set Sail, who was going too fast to Inst. After tho race J. Beale was brought before the stewards and censured for not riding Rapier right out, Beale stated that he thought he had won Iho race, and for this reason dropped his hands and oeased riding. _ Battlement riid wat seem able to get going and lost
a lot of ground in making the sharp turn out of the straight and on into the back stretch. He was hopelessly out of it at the seven-furlong post. If Set Sail had been more patienty handled and covered loss ground, she would have about won. Her display will probably result in her seeing a short price for more important engagements at the summer meetings coming close on the calender. Celerity II missed the jump-out in the Tycho Handicap which Sagittarius won well but was perhaps lucky that the favourite failed to begin as she made up a tremendous lot of ground. A fancied article in Gay Sonnet ran a patchy sort of race and might have galloped freer if running without a breastplate and rings. The first and second, however, were too good for her. Pink Note won well in the President s Handicap in which Ophir also put up a good race as he was sent back last on the rails as they ran along the back. Sweet Melody w'as allowed to run herself into the ground, and in the first halfmile had a lead of between eight and 10 lengths. Warhaven ran a fair race, but he failed after some of his supporters proclaimed a win for him at the home turn. Gold Brick just failed to stall oh Ophir’s challenge, and the latter would have troubled the winner with a better passage in the race. Battle Colours went out a pronounced fancy for the Maiden, Plate, but he failed to begin, and fell into a bad position in the early part of the race. Credit opened up a good gap, but faded out at six furlongs, and was beaten in the last couple of strides by Crossbow. The favourite came through the field towards the finish and fell close to the placed lot. Princess Mafalda and Prophet’s Mark looked danporous tit the home turn, hut the former fade-’ out. Clarenson went out third favourite, and, according to the rules of racin", bis supporters lose their money. Gold Mint was made a pronounced fancy for the Kcrrytown Hack Handicap, but Mime got well away at the start, and managed to stall off the favourite at the finish. Perhaps both were lucky to beat Water low', who failed to get an opening on the rails, and only found it a tew strides from the post. The card was conclude 1 with 1 aperenase going out a fairly good favourite for the Flying Handicap, in which she drew 10 at the barrier. The field gave a lot of trouble at the post, and anything behind the leading division was lucky to got anything like a clear run. Lava led until a couple of strides from the post, when Receipt got up and beat her, whilst Paperchase who w'as unsighted in the early part of the race, might have won with a potter run. The same remark applies to Ament. who was carried wide at the turn. * Mr P D M'Nab was not as successful as usual’ at the barrier, but he had a had lot to handle in the final event on the the day the totalisator, compared with £13,310 10s on the opening day last year. Set Sail showed the way to the straight, which she entered wide. Front Rank joined Set Sail at the distance, where the field closed up. Front Rank drew to the front, and, stalling off a late run from Rapier, beat him by a neck. Set Sail was about two lengths away third, and Vaward was next. Lava was still in charge with Dancing Days when they straightened for home, and the field closed up at the distance. Inside the distance Receipt put in a claim and Paperchase arrived _ on the scene with Arpent, who was carried a bit wide, at the turn. WANGANUI TRAINING NOTES. (Fbom Oar Special Correspondent.! WANGANUI, December 10. The useful hack Elysianor failed to repeat his dual success recorded at Feilding earlier in the spring, when ho was tried over the same course last week. Elysianor is down to make a reappearance at the Manawatu meeting, in which ho will have to meet some smart hacks, but with good going ho should not disgrace himself. Civility, who put up a brilliant gallop yesterday morning, claims engagements at both the Auckland and Manawatu meetings, being entered freely for the events at both fixtures. The daughter of Elysian and Civilisation is very well at the present time, but one would like to have seen her race so as to sharpen her up for events ahead. Apparently, her connections have given up the thought of testing her stamina for her engagements throughout the holidays are only in events up to 10 furlongs,. At Ashhurst recently Lady Cynthia ran quite a good race in the maiden event, depite being olf tho course at the homo turn. This was repeated at Feilding on the first day, but_ her next day’s outing caught her just right. Her trainer said that he conditions, mud almost up to the knees,' would suit her, and that he was right was proved in the race. Lady Cynthia ran true all tho way and then only went under to Eka in the last few strides in a punishing finish. Lady Cynthia is a five-year-old daughter of Cyntoi and Neroz. and therefore half-sister to a fair performer in Hallowroz. A good few of the Cyntoi breed have been racing about Wanganui, and they have still to prove themselves. Lady Cynthia won well at Woodvillo this Alario ran two good races under difficulties at Feilding, and therefore it came as a surprise to learn that the Waverley owner had disposed of him to Mr Chvc M'Kay, owner and trainer of Santiago, recently of Bulls but now domiciled at Feilding. The San Fran gelding has been a splendid slake earner in his day. but since leaving tho stable of Mr W. H. Dwyer he seems to have lost his host form, although he recently showed prospects of a return. During the time Alaric was trained at Wanganui he won £2700 in stakes which are not bad earnings for a horse the purchase price of which was round about £250. Last week the purchase price at which the chestnut changed hands was said to be £IOO. His new owner will be unlucky if he does not win a race or two. At present he seems to have got hold ot a bargain, another Santiago, in fact, for which ho is said to have paid the same hS A!loway put up a fine performance when bo sprung a surprise at Feilding, and he has gone on the right way since. Un Thursday morning be was worked the reverse way, indicating that ho is to race at Kllerslio this month. His next race will probably bo in the Queen’s Plate on the first day of the Auckland meeting and there is every possibility of his running well forward in this, ns well as in other engagements. Alloway is by Limond from Admyra, a useful sort of' sprinter in her day, hut being by the Koatanui sire should be' able to run on over the distance. One of the best of those over 9.0 m the Auckland Cup is To Monamn. who is to bo ridden in that event by L. G. Morris At New Plymouth last Saturday the Potoa gelding was stretched out over a mile and a-quarter in company with Hipo and ivunt l eaf. At parts of the journey and after tho trial it was stated that the connections of tho horse were well pleased. Monoghan. of whom nice, things are now being written, will probably make his next appearance in the principal haudican events at tho Taranaki summer meeting. It would occasion no surprise were Monoghan to extend further his winning record at both the Taranaki and Stratford meetings during the holidays. • Halgina continues to-school well on the Wanganui tracks, and he promises to make his presence felt at the Taranaki Stratford gatherings. He had one outing in public over the sticks, this being at Waverley where he ran a good fourth after making all the running. One of his opponents on the Taranaki circuit will be lamakana. but Halgina is a class above him. .and if he can be persuaded to give of his best lie should be well placed A team of four will do the Manawatu fixture in charge of the local tramen W. H Dwyer. They are Star Area, Great Day, Paleta, and' Limosa. After running at Awapuni the team may go on to Stratford. They are all well and should pick up a stake or two during the holidays. Paleta, one of the Leighton breed, will be given a race or two during the holidays, and then be put aside, as be is growing fast, and it is not proposed to hurry him. Tvoauau was responsible for a pleasing effort when he won the hurdles on the second day at Feilding. With half a mile gone ho was giving the leaders a big start out. Desnlte the weight he- had to carry and tho hoavv going, he beat them home. At the forthcoming Manawatu meeting Koauau is down to race on the flat on the first two (lavs, and as he is in form he should run fairly well.. Much interest was taken in thc_ reappearance of Deluge at Feilding in view of hie engagements at the Auckland meeting. j.he speedy Absurd gelding contested the open snrint, on the first day. and although unplaced his owner m”st have been ple_ased with his showing. The chestnut has been allocated 7.12 in the Railway Handicap at F.llerslie. a luxury impost, for him, and if he makes nnv headway in prepartion he must be considered for bis outings up north.
