BUTCHERS’ MARGIN OF PROFIT. COUNCIL URGES REDUCTION. CPree* Association— By Xeleg<mph— Copyright.) LONDON, December 3. Though butchers gave evidence before the Food Prices Commission in 1925 that 20 per cent, on the cost was a fair gross profit, the Food Council’s report, published to-day, says; “The council has carefully watched the Sraithficld retail price lists for the guidance of housewives, and has found that over a period of 26 weeks in 1920 the prices of Scottish and Argentine beef were 50 per abo\e cost, and in one w T eek 70 per cent.” The council questions the worth of the lists, which, it says, do not observe any consistent theory of margins, but appear to be based on individual butchers’ ideas of profits. “If the witnesses are correct,” it says, “there should be substantial reductions. For example, beef in October should have been from Id to 2d per lb cheaper, and English mutton and beef from 21d to 3d cheaper.”—A. and N.Z. Cable.
