RAVENSBOURNE CLUB’S OPENING. Tho Kavonsbounio Boating Club opened its 1926-27 season on Saturday afternoon under most promising conditions. There was a very large attendance ol residents and visiting doating men, and the presence of a big neet of yachts and motor boats in the nay brought back memories of days of the past. The weather was not very promising at the start, but the conditions improved later. The wind also died away late in the afternoon, which caused tho postponement of two model yacht races. _ The usual speeches in connection with the opening were made by Air H. L. Xapley, M.P. for the district; Air J. T. Paul, ” president of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association; Air G. A. Wiseman, commodore of the Port Chalmers Yacht and Motor Boat Club, and the Rev. James J. Cairney. The commodore of tho Ravensbourne Club (Air H. E. Aloller) said it was very pleasing to see such a large number present, and thanked the West Harbour Brass Band for attending, and also Air J. Potter for carrying residents and visitors on harbour trips with his launch. He also thanked the vice-commodore (Mr W. Webber) for placing his launch Eclipse at the disposal of the committee to cope with the large number who were anxious to make harbour trips. Mr Mollei also welcomed the Rev, Air Cairney. The success of the function was greatly clue to the efforts of Alessrs A. Grant, P. Young, J. M'Pherson and C. Wilson, who did everything possible to make the opening one of the most attractive in the harbour. Afternoon tea was served, and this taxed the efforts of a large band of young ladies. These were under the guidance ofMiss Connor, whose assistants were Misses Hodge, George, Spratt, Mears, Young, APMillan, Baird, Connor (2), and Alason (2) ■ Ouring the afternoon a' first-class model yacht race was sailed. There were seven competitors, and the race was won by C. Nash’s Vera, with A. Spratt s Thistle second, and L). Oonnor s Rothesay third, NORTH-EAST HARBOUR CLUB. The North-East Harbour Boating Club held ; ts second cmb race on Saturday afternoon before a large number of spectators. The course was from the boat-shed, around a bouy moored off Raynbird s Bay, back over the starting line, and around a nagged bouy off Mitchell’s shed, a distance of lour miles. The Sailing Committee decided to send the boats round in order to enable the boat-owners to visit Ravensbourne to take part in the Ravensbourne Club s ope.nin". Four boats faced the starters—nameiy. Silvocea, Marewa, Stella apd Ngaio. Jewel was late in arriving, and did not compete. Silvocea was the first boat away, followed oy Marewa, Stella and Ngaio. After round ing the buoy and returning to the starting line Silvocea was unfortunate to break down and had to be turned in to Company’s Bay. Alarewa then took the lead, and a good race resulted in Marewa winning from Ngaio, which had overhauled Stella after lounding Alitehee’s Buoy, and finished a close second, Marewa steered the best course. Stella .was unfortunate, being about 25 seconds late in starting, Ngaio started to the second, and had her skipper steered a straight course to Company’s Bay would have made tho finish very exciting. However,_ there was very little difference in the finishing times. Result:— Marewa (A. Robinson), Bmin 30soc, 3hr 38min 15sec J Ngaio (Dr Cotterill) scr, 3hr 38mm bOsoc 2 Stella (A. W. Hazelwood), 3min, 3hr 39min 33seo " Silvocea fW. Timms, junr.) 13min 0 The officials controlling the race were: — Judges, Alessrs L. Kellett and C. J. Hook; starters, Messrs W. M‘Envoy and F. R. Brown; timekeeper and handicapper, Mr A. Lindsay. The race was decided under the Alark Foy system for the first time by the club. AIODEL YACHT RACES. The Otago Model Yacht Club sailed its second series of races on Saturday afternoon on the Anderson’s Bay Lagoon. Ihe wind was strong from the south-west in tho early part of the afternoon, but gradually died down. Tho result of the 30-inch race was as follows: —\V. Wallace’s Gem, 1; T. Cochran’s Thistle, 2. The result of the 3-foot class was as follows; —W. G. Ilcs’s Noresca, 1; E. Vincent’s Fenella, 2; C. M'Lean’s White Wings, 3. The second race for the 30-inch class resulted: —T. Cochran’s Thistle, 1; W. Wallace’s Gem, 2. The 24-inch race was not sailed owing to the lightness of the wind. =======
