THE FESTIVE SEASON.

ASSISTING THE POOR. AUCKLAND BOARD’S GRANT. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, December 4. The purchasing power of the shilling has sadly diminished since the day when the recipients of relief from the Hospital Board received that amount to enable them to buy some extra little thing for Christmastime. It has been decided by the Auckland Board to make the allowance this year the same as last year, which is 2s 6a for every person receiving relief. Thus a mother with four children, whose husband is in hospital, will get an allowance of IDs to purchase something extra for the Christmas dinner. Old couples who are travelling along the road of life together, and who need assistance from the board, wilt get 5s to enable them to have a good Christmas dinner. Nothing which the board gives on behalt of the ratepayers is looked forward to with so much pleasure as the gratuity which ie so freely given at the festive season> when every person’s heart turns towards helping to make happy those brethren less fortunate than themselves, and_ when the memory turns backwards to think of other and brighter days.
