January 1, 3.—Stratford R.C. annual. January 1. —Waikouaiti R.C. annual. January I.—Wyndham R.C. annual. January 3, 4.—Southland R.C. Forbury Park spring meeting opens to-daj-. The special train from the north brought 29 horses from Christchurch, while others were picked up at wayside stations. The heavy rain that set in yesterday morning restricted training operations at Forbury Park, and only the early arrivals were on the track. Robert Todd did a nice work-out, and as a result is likely to find favour for his race to-day. Engagement was sent round a few circuits at a fast clip, and showed that R. Townley has her very well at present. Dalnahinc retains his condition remarkably well. Nelson Ata is in the pink of condition, but somehow two miles seems to bo about a furlong too far for him. The Spring Handicap field is not a very' strong one, and he may be able to trot leisurely for the first mile, which may assist him to see the journey right out. General Bingen looks fit enough to win anything, and off the limit of the St. Kilda Handicap he has every chance to prove that some of his recent form has been all wrong. Mr T. Fox. owner of Dolly Dillon, is at present feeling the effects of an operation on one of his arms, and may not be behind the President’s Handicap candidate to-day. In all probability J. Davidson will hold the lines over the Harold Dillon mare. Dillon Wilkes is not encaged to-day, but is likely to line up with one of the fields to-morrow. Prince Pointer has been pacing brilliantly in his races, and is now right back among the champions. His 4.22 at Otahulm on Wednesday was a wonderful go. The nominations for the South Canterbury fixture next month are numerically strong, and are the foundation of a successful meeting. Absurd’s hurdling sou. Radiac, is to bo schooled for cross-country racing nest season. He and King Abbcv will be hurdling in the south next month. FORBURY PARK MEETING. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. The local season of light harness racing will be opened to-day, when the first day’s card of tho Forbury Park Trotting Club’s spring meeting will be decided. The fields are numerically weak, and in two cases are of one-dividend dimensions, but should the weather be favourable some fine racing should be witnessed. The track recovers quickly, and by the time racing commences to-day there may be no apparent effects of yesterday’s rain. ROSLYN HANDICAP. Twelve unhoppled trotters have paid up for the first race, and Bon Wood may find most support from backers. Elzear and Grand Nature both won in saddle at Invercargill last season, and a repetition of .the latter’s form on that occasion would make him dangerous. Hawkesbury’s Pride showed pace when last at Forbury, and may carry it further this time, while' Robert Todd’s pood work yetserday morning will find friends for him. When the machine closes, however, it will probably be found that Bon Wood, Hawkesbury’s Pride, and Elzear are carrying the heaviest investments. PROGRESSIVE HANDICAP. Twelve is again tho main for the Progressive. and Uoleno Pointer’s easy win at Geraldine is not likely to be forgotten. Day Pointer has improved since going into A. M’Lellan’s stable, while Pert Pointer must have done something to justify the support that came for him at Winton. It would not be surprising to sec the progeny of Logan Pointer fighting it out, with First Imperial handy. ST. KILDA HANDICAP. The field of eight in the mile saddle contains the Mountain Chimes-Four Bells bracket, and the latter’s good work at Forbury may tend to make the number favourite. Four Bells may, however, find it beyond him to give starts to some of the runners, and of these General Bingen, Macanda, and Rollicking Bells appeal the most. Logan Lad is a doubtful proposition at the start, and Nipper would need to ha handled more judiciously thau he Urns at Oamaru for him to have a chance. SPRING HANDICAP. Speculation on the Spring Handicap is likely to take a fairly wide range, and there may be no pronounced favourite. Underviewer was solidly supported for his race at Oamaru on Labour Day, and between the several breaks ho put in showed a fine turn of speed. On the same mark is Tim Wood, who was supported for a race at Timaru as though the result was a foregone conclusion, but he stopped at the post. Avalanche would make it interesting if he would only do his best, but ho seldom does that, while the last furlong may trouble Nelson Ata. The order cf favouritism may be Underviewer, Tim Wood, Nelson Ata. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. Ever since the declaration of acceptances nothing has been more favoured than I’eter Bingen, and ho will probably lie given pride of place in the betting pool. The only question with him is whether tin: last bit will trouble him. The backmarker is Logan Lon. and if then; is any loitering by the front lot she will make the finish interesting. Dolly Duion has been doing nice track work, but seems to be cnc of the unlucky sort, while Event may nullify his speed by hanging at the barrier. Dalnahinc, Bing Boy. and Napland will sec the journey right out, and the numbers hoisted over the judge’s box may be those of Peter Bingen, Logan Lou, and Dalnahinc. THE CAVERSHAM HANDICAP. Terence Dillon won a double at Invercargill in impressive fashion last season, and that fact will not be forgotten when the pool on the Cavcrsham Handicap is opened. Homer is a vastly improved pacer, and provided he keeps clear • f trouble will be one of the front lot when beads are turned for home. Hoou Hay has won two races recently, and won them well, while Jolly Pet has previously shown a liking for the track. However, Homeland Hoon Hay may cause Terence Dillon most trouble. DOMINION HANDICAP. The smallest field of tho day will face the starter for the Dominion Handicap, and tho favourite may he found in Pete Peter, who has been doing good work. Engagement went well on the track yesterday morning, and as a consequence made many friends. DASH HANDICAP. The final event on the card carries a disappointing field, and Main Voyage may claim more support than the Oamaru pair (Bismurate and Ivy Audubon). Bing Boy and Four Bells are engaged earlier in the (lay, and Lady Embrace too frequently takes it into her head to dwell at the start. WOODVILLE JOCKEY CLUB. (Per Exited Press Association.) Nominations for the Auckland Trotting Club's summer meeting were originally advertised to close to-day, but the Canterbury Owners and Breeders’ Association asked the club it it would alter the date, in view of the fact that so many Canterbury owners and trainers would have horses engaged at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting.
