RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION.
ROSLYN AND KAIKORAI. The monthly meeting of the executive of the Roslyn and Kalkoral Ratepayers’ Association was held on Thursday evening, Mr P. L. Ritchie presiding. Correspondence from the town clerk regarding the lighting at the tramway Junction area near the Imperial Ground after the cars stopped running for the night, stated that an allocation would be made on the estimates for the ensuing year. The Town Clerk also advised that the baths at Fraser’s Gully would be opened for the season on Monday. Satisfaction was expressed that the children’s playing area was nearing completion. The weather lately had seriously hindered progress, but now the levelling was finished, and with better weather the grass should soon be showing through. A suitable patch of ground for two lawn tennis courts, and also a patch suitable ror croquet, was available. With all these sports grounds in the centre of the district the residents should now be well provided for. The Fire Board wrote .stating that the fire alarm boxes had been erected at 25 points throughout the district, and were In commission.—Satisfaction was expressed by the mepibers at the new installation, and it was decided to forward a letter of thanks to the board. It was also noted that a new and more sightly fence was being erected on the Fire Board’s property facing Highgate. A report was received that the speeding nuisance of motors and cars In the district had certainly decreased, but a certain amount was still prevalent, and if continued offenders would be prosecuted. A large number of new subscribers were received, and they expressed appreciation and thanks for the excellent work being carried out by the executive. Reference to the recent sad accident at the tramway crossing at Highgate was brought up by the chairman, and a subcommittee was appointed, consisting of Messrs Buchler, Ellis, Moore, Sinclair, and the chairman, to consider the best means of improving or eliminating this danger spot. At the Octagon another grave danger existed from motor cars speeding while rounding the Stuart street corner, and passengers are In daily fear while boarding or alighting from the tram cars. The various works by the Oity Council in Highgate and Wright street was progressing, and when finished should make a vast improvement. At the instigation of the association one of the city banka had established an office in Roslyn for the convenience of traders and others, and It was hoped that full support would be given by members and the public generally.
