CHINESE LABOUR

LONG HOURS WORKED. ALLEGED UNFAIR COMPETITION. ACTION BY NEW SOUTH WALES GOVERNMENT. (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.; SYDNEY, November 13. The Government is attempting by the Factories and Shops Amendment Bill, at present before t?--> Assembly, to govern the hours and conditions of the Chinese furniture workers. Opposition members vainly protested against the Chinese not being allowed to work after 5 o'clock in the afternoon and on Saturdays, also against prohibiting the Chinese from sleeping on factory premises, when none of these provisions applied to Europeans. The Minister of Labous strongly defended the provisions. He said that he had acted on the reports of the inspector, which showed that the Chinese were working from 12 to 14 hours daily. Cabinetmakers had told him that they were harassed by unfair Chinese competition.
