LAWRENCE METHODIST CHURCH.
SALE OF WORK. Fine weather prevailed for the Lawrence Methodist Church sale of work on Wednesday last. The sale was opened by the Mayor (Mr J. K. Simpson), who congratulated the ladies upon their fine display of articles, artistic, useful, and beautiful. As soon as the sale was declared open a very brisk business began, and the stallholders were kept busy almost up to closing time, and when the takings were counted great satisfaction was expressed with the results of the afternoon’s efforts. In the evening the attracted the crowd, and the people had still a ndnd to buy. The stalls had been erected by Messrs Asher, F. Plover, and H. Weather-ill. The plain-work stall was in the capable hands of Mesdames Varcoe and M'Neillyj fancy— Mesdames Lane and Bridgman; sweets— Mrs Asher and Misses Bella and Bessie M’Neilly; produce and cakes —Mrs and Miss Weatherall; tea rooms—Mesdames Here, Simpson, Russell, and Miss Russell; bran tub—Misses H. and M. Asher and Carlene; flower girls--Misses A. Miller, E. Russell, and C. and M. Hore; competitions —Messrs R. Robson W. Varcoe, Uont, E. Weatherall, and Plever, The winners of the competitions were Miss H. Asher. Messrs E. Weatherall, F. Plever, and J. Kennedy. The sugar bag competition created a good deal of interest, and the judges, Mesdames Finlayson and Moore, had difficulty in deciding, but finally the first prize went to Mrs Smyth, the second to Mrs Norrie, third to Mrs MTntosh, and Miss Margaret Simpson, a girl of 12, was highly commended.
