FLIGHT TO SAMOA

DEPARTURE POSTPONED. MACHINE FAILS TO RISE. (Frau Auo elation—By Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, September 25. When the time arrived for the commencement of Captain Williams’s flight to the Pacific Islands, the machine refused to rise, and the start had to be postponed. It is thought that the machine was so heavily loaded that the 250 h.p. engine was unable to develop sufficient power to overcome the suction between the undersurface floats and the water. Arrangements were made for a flight covering 14,000 miles from M Ibourne to Samoa via the cast coast of Australia, Thursday Island, New Guinea, Rabaul, Santa Cruz, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, and the Fiji Group. Captain Williams is to be in charge, and will be accompanied by a mechanic (vLo will bo trained as a pilot), and a wireless operator. The flight is expected to occupy two months.
