AT THE WIND’S MERCY
MAROEO’S BOUGH PASSAGE SAFE ARRIVAL AT SYDNEY. (Press Association—Bj Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, September 24. After a voyage of 55 days from Gisborne, during which howling westerly gales and mountainous seas were experienced, the Maroro reached Sydney at a late hour last night. The crew, numbering ten, suffered great privations. During the last fortnight the master - was compelled to ration the food, all hands receiving about one-third of the usual allowance. Calm weather prevailed till,.' they were off the East Cape, then a northwesterley gale was encountered. It blew with undiminished fury for seven days. The vessel, which was under bare poles, was blown out of its course at the rate of 100 miles a day. When the gale abated adverse winds were experienced for thirty days, and little progress was made. Fortunately plenty of drinking water was available. Beyond a few bruises the crew escaped injury. The Maroro was little damaged.
