WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was held yesterday, and was attended by Crs A, Heckler (ohair* man), P, Briscoe, J. M'Lachlan, 13. Laley, J. Preston, and G. Gilmore. CORRESPONDENCE. A voucher from the Public Works Department for £219. subsidy on highways expenditure, was received. A voucher from the Treasury for £789, subsidy on rates, was received. The Assistant Under-secretary. Public Works Department, wrote as to handing over the control of roads to local uodies, the communication being received. The Chairman of the District Highways Council tonvarded a copy ot the Alain Highways estimate for the different highways districts lor the current year.—utecoived. . The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Dunedin, wrote intimating that the property lately owned by Mr vY. G. Hogg, North Haroour and Bfueskin district, had boon leased, on a monthly tenancy, to Mr George watt, of Waitati.—Received. Mr F. G. Williams wrote regarding the commission appointed to apportion the cost of the reconstruction of the Hunedin-Port Chalmers road, and suggested that a tally of the traffic on this road be taken at different points from October 18 to 22. Received, the suggested tally being agreed to Mr J. Bitchouer M.P., forwarded a letter he had received from the Minister of Internal Affairs in connection with third party risks in respect of motor vehicles.— Received. ... Mr A. Bruce wrote drawing attention to the stale of Russell’s road at the entrance to his property. Received, and improvements to be effected, , Mrs M. Hall wrote complaining of refuse being deposited at the entrance to her property at Karitane.—lnspector to ascertain if a suitable spot could bo found for a rubbish tip ; notice to be erected warning people against depositing refuse in the spot indicated. Mr A. F. Anderson wrote asking that something bo done to improve the road to his property at Warrington.—Left in the hands of the inspector. Mr A. Jack, Mount Cargill, wrote regarding the formation of the deviation road to his property.—lnspector to attend to the matter meantime; grant to be applied for later. Mr John Howie and 10 other ratepayers wrote asking that street lighting be provided in Seucliff township.—lnquiry to be made whether the writers would assist in any way. , _ , . . The Secretary of the Purakanui Amenities Society wrote that the society would provide £ls towards the cost of improvmg the road to Purakanui.—Received. The Otago Motor Club wrote offering £lO towards the cost of improving the turn in the road at the junction of the Blueskin road to Purakanui.—Received. Dr Borrie wrote offering £SO from the ratepayers at Kawarika Point towards the cost of a bridge at Orokanui. provided other ratepayers on the road contributed a similar sum, —The matter was left in the hands of the members for the riding, and, in the ©vent of the necessary amount being forthcoming, authority be given the members for the riding to call for tenders for the W Mr R. G. Etheridge, Cargill road, wrote complaining about the closing of a bridge loading to the township of Waiters without due notice being given.—A reply to be sent that it was intended to close the bridge permanently unless the ratepayers using the roads provided £IOO towards the cost of erecting a new one, and that in the event, of the amount named being subscribed the bridge would only bo closed until the now bridge was erected. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Inspector reported as follows: Hawksbury Riding. The gravelling contract on Stony Peak road is finished, and 52yda of gravel have been put on the load at Mount Royal, which was cut up by the contractor’s motor lorry; 220yds of River gravel have been spread on the JVitiin road during the month between Palmerston and Goodwood Station road. Bothunes road has been surfaced where necessary, and the gorse is being cleared off the reserve at the junction of Mill road and Mount Matkina road. . , . , Weston Riding.—Sixty tons of crushed metal have been spread on the road between Warrington . and the boundary of the riding near Evansdale, 100 tons on Uuthill’s road, and 43 tons on Round Hdl road. Pryde’s road requires about 30 yards of metal above the Main road, and M'Gillivray’s road 20 yards maintenance metal. Russell's road is in a very bad state, the water-tables want cleaning qnt, some small slips cleared, and about 120 yards of metal lor the worst portions of the road. The gorse has been cleared off the reserve near Waikouaiti River bridge and along the river bank, and a portion of the road has been surfaced at the approach to Ballingdon Bridge. Bfueskin Riding. ’Thirty-two tons of crushed metal have been spread on the Main road at, Evansdale, and 30 tons on the Warrington road near the railway bridge. The new superstructure is being erected on Jackson’s Bridge, and the bridge should bo open for traffic next week. Orokauui Bridge has been closed to traffic, and fence* put across the road near each end of the bridge. - North-East Valley Riding.—The new bridge over Burns’s Oreek on the WaitattWakari road is now finished, and the approach to it is being formed and metalled. Willows have been planted over the slip at the Waitati end of the bridge, and .ruts have been filled in over a mile of the road from the heapo of metal at the roadside. The report was approved. GENERAL. Accounts amounting to £lO7l were passed for payment. The Chairman mentioned that the Mayor of Waikouaiti had informed him that he had received a letter stating that the Governor-General would bo in Waikouaiti at 2.30 p.m. on October 12. —It was decided to fall in with the arrangements made for icceiving his Excellency.
