UNEMPLOYMENT.
CHRISTCHURCH DEMONSTRATION. LEVY ON UNIONISTS SUGGESTED. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 23. “We won’t see our children skeletons in their clothes when tho Government deliberately created the situation which caused it,” declared Mr Fournier, leader of the Communists, addressing an unemployed demonstration this morning. About 200 attended the demonstration, and it was decided to hold another demonstration to-morrow night, and then to go as a deputation to the Hon. G. J. Andersou. A resolution was also passed asking the trade unions organisations to impose nu obligatory levy bn the employed members for the purpose of assisting the unemployed. POSITION IN DUNEDIN. The total unemployed in Dunedin is 145 —not a very large number when considered on a population basis. Yesterday tho Labour Department found employment for a number of men on the Portobello road construction work. There were 10 fresh applications for work, and out of the total unemployed 22 men were put on thework on the Portobello road. The position with regard to men working for the City Corporation is unaltered.
