September 22.. The classification of labour in the Dominion motor mechanics’ claims before the Conciliation Council occupied several hours. The chief point in dispute was whether assemblers of cars came under the heading of skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled labour. It was pointed out by the employers assessors that assembly was divided into many operations, each of which was apportioned to a separate worker, thereby rendering the labour unskilled. On the other hand, the employees contended that some makes of cars from England required a skilled man to assemble them. The council continued its sitting to-day, and it was not until nearly two hours after opening at 9 a.m., that an agreement was reached to place assemblers in the semiskilled section, the tuning up and final adjustments to be carried out by skilled men. It was agreed that the classes of labour be journeymen, apprentices and assistants, assemblers and motor garage assistants. Questions ns to what work some of these men should bo called upon to do wore held over. The matters of wages and were referred to the Arbitration Court. It was agreed that when a worker was called back after reaching home he should bo guaranteed a minimum of two hours, to bo paid for at the rate of time and a-half, or double time after 9 p.m.
