RUGBY FOOTBALL.
OTAGO v. WELLING LON. The annual representative match between Otago and Wellington will be played nt Carisbrook to-morrow. _ The matches between these two provinces have always provided closely contested games and excellent displays of Rugby football. Wellington are bringing down a young team and are considered a good all-round side. Otago also have a good team on the field, and the match should be closely contested. The members of the Wellington team arrived in Dunedin by the through express vesterday. They are staying at the City Hotel. The following players will represent the primary schools in a curtain-raiser to the Otago-Wellington match at 1.30 tomorrow:— Blues.—Hart, Cope, Watkins, Bricn, Leader, Tobin, Burgess, Wckia, Mains, Campbell, Ooughlan, M'Lcan, Robertson, Ogg, Ritchie. . , Colours. —Symonds, Turnbull, Richards, Blair, Trevathan, Bartlett, Blackwood, Millar, Stevens, Shore, Niven, Warren, Steele, Stuart, Chapman. , Reserves. —Rao, Butler, Howison, Litolff. The box plan is now open at the Bristol. CANTERBURY v. HAWKE S BAY. CONTEST FOR SHIELD INDEFINITE. (Peb United Pbess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH September 16. “Unless the selectors are satisfied that the Hawke’s Bay team to play Canterbury ia strong enough to do justice to the Bay, the match will not be for the Ranfurly Shield.” This statement was made by Mr Norman M'Kenzie,, manager,of the Hawke’s . Bay team, when interviewed on arrival here to-day. “Nepia will not come south,” Mr M’Kenzie said. “We will have to play men in positions foreign to them, and wo aro not going to throw the shield away.” The Canterbury Rugby team for Saturday will comprise Lflburno, Elvy, Carleton, Robilliard, Oliver, M'Gregor, Dailey, Scrimshaw, Gray, M’Cormack, Leahy, Ward, Waghorn, Jeffries,, and Dickson. Tile Hawkes’ Bay team is Paewai, Corkill, Blake, Grenside, Cooke, Johnson, Mill, Walker, Irvine, Swain, Campbell, M. Brownlie, C. Brownlie, Craven, and Single. Of the above only Swain is missing, and he is expected to arrive to-morrow morn-"'f'o-night the Hawke’s Bay officials made it clear that if Swain arrives the match will bo for the trophy. EXCEPTION TO A PLAYER. PROTEST FROM R.S.A. (Paa United Pbess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 16. It is now alleged that trouble over the position of a certain Hawke s Bay player is upsetting the chance of Saturday’s being a shield match. One account says that the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association protested against this man playing, ns he is alleged to have been a deserter during the war. The matter will probably be settled amicably. WEST COAST DEFEATS ASHBURTON. (Peb United Pbess Association.) ASHBURTON, September 16. The West Coast Rugby touring team defeated the Ashburton County representatives by 11 points to six. The visitors had the better of the forward play, particularly in the loose. The backs on both sides were faulty, dropping many passes. In tlia first spell the visitors had slightly the better of the play, scoring 8 points to nil, though the home team missed a couple of chances. In the opening of the_ second spell the home team attacked, scoring two tries, but afterwards the visitors put on another try. In the first spell Walton kicked a goal from the field, and scored a try and converted it. In the second spell ho scored a try. . . , _ The Ashburton tries were scored by JRobilliard and Mulhearn. At the annual meeting of the Wellington Racing Club the balance sheet showed that £13,900 was paid out in stakes, and £49 f s 9 in taxes. The interest totalled £8689. The total receipts were £95.842, of winch £61197 came from the totalisator; gates and railway, £18,497; fees from owners, £9679. ' , , Tho report mentioned that the work on the now grandstands is still going on, and pow'w has now been scoured for running an electric totalisator. Mr J. B. Hnrcourt was re-elected president.
