Forbury Park meeting. It is reported that A. E. Ellis may steer Fireblight in the Grand National Steeplechase. There would be a big demand for his services in tho saddle if he were better known in the North Island. Bicolor, a three-year-old brother to Windbag, is being mentioned in connection wifh the pricipal events to bo run at the Australian Spring meetings. Lord Dunraven has purchased Warden of the Marches from the National Stud to replace Hainault, who recently died. Desmond and Lomond were Lord Dunraven’s previous successful sires. Several offers wore made from abroad foi Warden of tho Marches, but as Lord Lonsdale and Captain Greer considered that the son of Phalaris was of the right stamp to keep English bloodstock up to its present high standard they turned these down, in favour of Lord Dnnraven’s offer of £20.000. When discussing the breakdown of negotiations in regard to the sale of Count Cavour. because of an unfavourable veterinary report, tho well-known handicappor and one-time starter, Mr F. J. M'Manomin, related a story anent Levanter when the bay son of Captivator was under offer to him at £250. The report of the veterinary surgeon on tho bay gelding was not quite satisfactory, with tile result that the other persons who were to be partners with himself deemed it wise to stand off, and, though quite wishful to chance matters himself, ho had to let what was to prove a prize slip past. Levanter stood a great amount of work subsequently, and was deemed good enough to contest the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase. The Martian horse Subjection who ran a good race at the Wellington meeting, is reported to have changed hands at 200 guineas. A 1 Mack, the Amorioan-bred trotter, trained at Auckland, is a likely starter at next month’s meeting at Addington. A 1 Mack, when racing in hold a race record of and was officially timed to go 2.3 i for a mile. Since his arrival in New Zealand he has not approached these times m his races. Escort, who was held under lease, has left W. J. Tomkinson’s stable. According to Dame Rumour the Trotting Cup is over, and Imprint has stamped his name on the list of winners. A case which is causing considerable interest in sporting circles at Homo, will shortly come before the High Court. Michael Beary, tho well-known jockey, is the plaintiff, and tho proprietors of “Reynold s Illustrated Nows” tho defendants. Beary is claiming damages in respect of an alleged libel contained in an article jn “Reynold’s” in July. 1525, following Bcary’s suspension by tile Jockey Club. The defendants have entered a plea of justification. When tho last mail left England Lord Derby headed the list of winning owners with £15,983. T. Weston was at the head of the jockeys’ list with 24 wins, 0. Smirko being second with 18. Horses trained by the Hon. G. Lambton had won £19,363 in 13 races. Walter Griggs had trained 18 winners of £4144, and Stanley Wootten 16 of £3473. There seems to bo every prospect of the Waimate Hunt, meeting and South Canterbury meeting proving particularly successful affairs. The imported horse Musketoon has been retired from tho turf, and is to join Mrs Perry’s stud. The two-year-old Tea Bell, who was very little inferior to the best of his ago in the autumn, has done remarkably well during a spell (says on Auckland writer), and is now working along steadily with a view to spring racing. lie has thickened out considerably, and also grown slightly and should again do well next season. Courage is a very strong point with Tea Bell. » J. H. Jefford is booked to leave for Sydney at the end of the month with Rapine, Star Stranger, Joy King, jand tho Paper Money—lmpediment colt. The Impediment colt should bo called Impede or Endorse. The Absurd gelding Glenross is under offer to an Australian owner. What is probably a record booking for a sire in Ireland, occurred in tho case of Argosy, the sire of Embargo, who recently won the Irish Two Thousand Guineas. Argosy stands at Senator Parkinson’s stud at Maddenstown, The Curragh, and immediately after Embargo’s success Senator Parkinson was asked to name tho terms for the stallion’s services for next season. He set the figure at 200 guineas, and on tho following morning tho horse’s list was not only fuly subscribed, but several nominations were taken for 1928 at the fee mentioned. M. M‘Carton rode Forgery when the Paper Money gelding won in Sydney, and he also landed a good race with Coolgong at Canterbury Park on June 26. The Spearmint horse .Last Dart is to go to the stud next season. One of his mates will bo Mantua, one of the most wonderful mares ever raced in New Zealand. The Solforino mare haa never been sound in recent years, hut nevertheless continued to win races. Lady Comet was bought as a foal at foot together with her dam at 16 guineas. She is a great stayer, and could have been a Grand National steeplechaser possibly, but was not entered. The imported Jo.v Bird, who got amongst tho winners at Wellington, cost 570 guineas in England. Tho Waikato Hunt has purchased the Irish-bred stallion Little England. Mr J. C. N. Grigg is reducing tho Longbeach stud and during tho Grand National meeting will send several mares and young stock up for sale. Acceptances for tho South Canterbury Hunt meeting are duo on Monday, July 19. Handicaps for tho first dav of tho Metropolitan Trotting Chib’s Grand National meeting are duo on July 20. The Waimate Hunt will hold their amial race meetning on Thursday next, and South Canterbury Hunt will follow with their annual meeting on tho following Saturday. Red Cent, will carry Mr Norman Rutberford’s colours when ho next appears in public. J. T. Jamieson will probably have Nippy, Le Chowcas and Eden Hall at tho Grand National meeting. The death is reported from Sydney of tho Multiform horse Beragoon Ho won the Breeders’ Plate of 1912, and sired several useful performers. Thero is not a superabundance of sunshine in the average person’s life, and if one can do anything to impart a gleam of brightness or a ray_ of hope into onr ordinary workaday affairs it seems harsh to create deliberately an eclipse where the sun seldom shines. Still, that is what some people—who act as lenders of men —wish to do if they can. Ever since the mania for gigantic art unions came into vogue there has been more or less outcrv against tins so-called great encouragement to gamble. That is from the point of view of people who are comfortably placed. Whilst the Exhibition was in progress in Dunedin, if there was one place more than another which attracted and hold the crowds night after night it, was tho Amusement Park, where people obtained n very pleasant nreak in their ordinary work-every-day life. The average working man holds a very remote chance of saving sufficient to provide for

an old age when earning capacity has vanished, and who would blame him if he risks an occasional half-crown which might bring sufficient to make him more than passing rich in a modest way ? Everyone knows that gambling, if carried to excess, is an evil, and an evil apt to create disaster Still, if a person can obtain a tchanco of getting several hundreds of pounds by risking a coin that he will not greatly miss, it is hard that he should not bo able to do so with the utmost freedom, instead of being hectored and lectured on the evils of gambling. We are, in fact, a lot of arrant humbugs. Wo make an outcry against the evils of gambling because some cheap “art unions” have been put on the market, but there is an almost absolute silence about the hundreds and hundreds of pounds which have been annually sent over to Tattorsalls’ sweeps because they are not receiving tho publicity boosting the same as the comparatively tin-pot gambling which has been going on with the art union schemes. Tho public is entitled to a reasonable amount of pleasure, and if this takes the form of chasing a couple of thousand pounds with a half-crown, no one should say nay. Millions of pounds are squandered in pleasures, which are not objected to. Anyone who objected would not l>e listened to. Think of tho crowds streaming into picture shows and theatres every night to buy a little pleasure and enjoyment after a day’s work. Others may spend their money on what is deemed cheap and useless literature, but many like it and are pleased to pay for it. In much the samo way many people patronise racing and indulge in the pleasure of punting and backing their fancy in a race. Here again they are paying for pleasure with the chance of obtaining u lot for a little. The spirit of gambling is an inherent trait of human nature, and cannot bo eradicated by legislation, which should bo just as futile if it were brought in to stop a person’s hair from growing or to prevent a man from becoming bald. There is no desire to justify gambling, but one is at least justified in presenting a side of the picture which those who talk about the evils of gambling apparently cannot see. If a modest investment can impart a ray of hope and sunshine into an ordinary workaday life, perish tho thought that would create an eclipse where the sun chines all too seldom !
