(F&h United Press Association.) GISBORNE, May 27. ! The Harbour Board’s dredge Korua, in making an excavation for the diversion of the river in connection with the harbour works, has achieved results which are claimed to eclipse the best work of any similar vessel in New Zealand. During two months’ operations the Korua removed over 100,000 tons of spoil, the bulk of which was papa rock. At present the vessel is maintaining an average of nearly 1500 tons per week. The total on one day reached 400 tons. NAPIER, May 27.
The annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union decided to-day to forward the following remit to the annual Dominion conference: —“That the conference be recommended to urge the farmers when employing labour to give preference to those farmers who have been unfortunate enough through adversity and hard times to leave their holdings.” WELLINGTON, May 27. At the conference of secondary school teachers to-day a remit was carried urging the University Senate to revise the syllabuses in history and geography for m triculation and junior university scholarship examinations, so as to bring them into line with modern requirements. The mover declared that history and geography were the ugly sisters of the secondary school curriculum. James Warren Williams, aged 32 years, who is now serving three months’ imprisonment for breach of his probation license, admitted obtaining credit by fraud to the extent of 30s lor taxi hire, and also a first-class railway fare from Wellington to Auckland by means of a valueless cheque. He was sentenced to three months on each charge, the terms to be concurrent and to be served after the present sentence. A deputation waited on the Hon. J. A. Young (Minister of Health) to-day to protest against closing the Otaki Hospital. The Minister said he hoped that a satisfactory settlement would be reached. He was conferring with the Palmerston North Hospital Board on the matter so as to make suitable provision for the reception of urgent surgical and medical cases, and to deal with maternity cases for that end of the district.
A big slip on the Hutt road in Tai Tai Gorge, on the city side of the Silverstream railway bridge, has completely blocked the highway to the Wairarapa. A very large volume of spoil came down, spreading right across the Hutt road and carrying away the telegraph lines. The Royal Agricultural Society held its third annual meeting to-day. The chairman, Mr W. Perry, said that the second year of the society had been most successful Hp anticipated the complete success of the show at Auckland this year, especially in dairy stock and light horses. The balance sheet showed a deficit of £SB. The meeting is proceeding. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr W. Perry (Masterton); vicepresidents, Messrs W. W.
