PAYING FOR INSTRUMENTS.
ST. HILDA BAND CONCERT. For the past 15 year? the St. Hilda bandsmen have played with the same instruments, the worth of which has been proved at many concerts. Some months ago it became necessary to obtain one or two more instru ments for the use of the band at the recent contest held m Dunedin, and the excellent achievements there have proved tire wisdom of augmenting the combination. But instruments are costly, and_ while the new items are yet to be .dealt with by the finances of the band, there are still payments to be made on the old set. Naturally then, the benefit concert for the band’s instrument fund, held in the St. Hilda Town Hall last evening, attracted a satisfactory attendance of supporters and residents The Mayor of the borough (Mr R. W. Hall), who, with with Mr IV. W. Pennycuick, carried out tho secretarial work, occupied the chair, and after outlining the worthy cause for which the concert had been organised, he promised those present an excellent evening a entertainment. The promise was amply fulfilled, for the programme was , a particularly enjoyable one. Leading amateur talent was associated with the band in a concert that drew the hearty applause of the audience after every item. The programme was as follows; —Selections, marches, and other items hv the St Hilda Band, songs by Miss Mollie Vickers, Mr C- Snell, and Mr Gordon Henderson; violin solos by Mr W Le Gall; humorous items by Mr 11. WilsonBrown; cornet duet puessfs G. Christie and Bud Wills); and a recitation by Mr C. H. Russel. Miss A. Davis capably filled the duties of accompanist.
