The weather has been most exasperating during the past week. Rain has been followed by a brief period of fine weather, and just as matters seemed to be improved, down came the rain again. On Wednesday the weather cleared and built up hopes that the long spell of drizzling rain had left for another climate, but the evening saw a return of rain, which continued overnight. .It was still in evidence yesterday morning at Wingatui, but towards noon a wintry sun struggled through the grey sky and continued in evidence during the afternoon. The extreme outside of the course proper at Wingatui was thrown open, and some interesting work took place. In fact, it was a good recompense for those who were courageous enough to wend their way to the course during a heavy drizzle. Eaton Bells and Pink Note worked from the mile post to the home turn, and pulled up well after strong work. They both look in good racing shape. Palencia was schooled over six fences, concluding with the stand double. He fenced well, and afterwards cantered. Miss Winkie and Fulmar galloped six furlongs in Imm 25 2-ssec. This will convev some idea of the extra ground that had to be covered and the state of the going. Miss Winkie is one of the popular picks for the Tradesmen’s, in which it is understood that Eastwood will have the mount. Brightling and Marmont worked five furlongs in Imin 18 2-ssec without being fully extended. Bonena and Vogue left six furlongs behind in Imin Slsec, and sever furlongs in In.in 45sec.
Circulation went six furlongs in Imin SOsec, and seven in Imin 43 2-ssec. Tione and Buoyant left six furlongs behind in Imin 26 2-ssec, with the latter finishing best. Tione is rounding up nicely and coming on again. Anton outjumped Galaxy over four fences, but the latter got to him at the stand double, where the Australian-bred gelding again beat him over the timber. It is a great pity that Anton is a bit amiss in the respiratory organs, as he is a particularly smart jumper and really hurdles his fences. Clutha ran half a mile along the back in 55sec. • Coastguard led Roman Archer and King Sol over a mile in 2min 0 2-ssec. All British beat Luthy home at the end of five furlongs in Imin 12sec. Galaxy required 61 2-ssec to gallop half a mile after being schooled. Mantua cantered a circuit, and then beat Last Dart over five furlongs in Imin 13sec. Pamplona shaped better than Kipling over four fences, and was then pulled off, whilst the latter went on and crossed the stand double iu good style. Both horses afterwards did steady pacing over three circuits' on the inside grass. Cartoon worked over a couple of circuits and was then sent sent at the sod wall on the course proper. He put in an excellent jump. The fences on the steeplechase course are, by the way, open for schooling, but very little use is made of the opportunity. Jolly Glad covered the last five of six furlongs in Imin 19sec. All Style worked a couple of circuits at a good strong pace. Ravena, on the outside, and Overdrawn began in front of the stand and clapped on the pace as they raced past the ninefurlong peg. They went the distance in 2mm 17 3-ssec, half-mile in 60 2-ssec, and a mile in 2min Isec. Overdrawn appeared to finish stronger than the mare, but both went well and were not ridden out.
Adjutor gave a good display over four flights of hurdles, and was afterwards allotted steady pacing. Hurdy Gurdy finished well when concluding half a mile with Incursio in 69sec.
Uncle Bob and Red Kriss went a good solid pace over two circuits on the inside grass. Oashman finished up strongly at the end of a once round on the course. Apache, Irish, Frenchman. Mazama, Francaise, and Paris, over-night arrivals from the south, were allotted steady pacing. They all look well and forward in condition. Tholomon, Taboo, and a few others were also worked. Listening Post will be submitted to auction during the Dunedin winter meeting. Los Ambus and Tommy Dodd are to be shipped to Melbourne on Monday next. Pink Terrace has rejoined J. Euttledge’s stableHappy Days has been sold, and is destined for Australia, but will" not make the journey until August. He has made a recovery from the mishap which caused a halt in his training and schooling over hurdles. Sherlock has joined J. B. Pearson’s stable. Red Wink is reported to be going on satisfactorily in his work. Sprinkler is said to be showing an improved appearance as a result of his racing at Ashburton. E. J. Mason will sail on June 3 for Sydney with two or three rising two-year-olds. Charlatan has returned to Riccarton, and may be raced on the second and third days of the Dunedin winter meeting. Carnot galloped four furlongs in 50sec at Riccarton on Tuesday morning, and is expected to shape well at Wingatui next week, according to reports from Christchurch.
Zaragoza will be taken to Auckland this, week, and on return F. D. Jones will leave for Sydney with Limerick and possibly three others. Sun Up is reported to bo going on nicely in his work. Deucalion, Moorland, Tigerland, Whipcord, Gay Queen, Kilris. Chickwheat, Bonatic, Jubilant Oriflamb, Sprinkler, Sayonara, Bonomel, Otipir, Carnot. Sun Up, Rapier, The Harp, Goosestep, and Viewpoint are expected to arrive at Wingatui to fulfil engagements at the Dunedin winter meeting. P. M’Brearty has been engaged to ride Tuki at the Auckland winter meeting.
11. Wiggins has accepted a retainer to ride for Mr Eric Riddiford next season Wiggins in the meantime leaves to ride at the Sydney winter meetings. Most of the Riccarton horses engaged at Wingatui will leave this evening for the south. The jumper Oashman has been purchased by Mr R. C. Mills, of Southland. It is a matter of regret that the North Island horses engaged at the Dunedin ■winter meeting were allowed to drop out of their engagements. Still, the fields ■which remain should provide some good sport. All that is required to make a successful meeting is two or three davs’ fine weather before it opens and then during the week. The Christchurch Press reports that there is a lucrative position vacant in connection with racing in the East. The secretary of the New Zealand Racing C'onferei-cs has received the following cablegram from Singapore:—“Applications invited for position of Stipendiary Steward Straits Racing Association. Salary, £IOO single man pelmonth; £llß married, inclusive. Applications closa end August.” Waitaki Girl is again moving freely in her track work. In the decision of the Warrnambool Pup of £6OO on the 6th instant, a brace of New Zealand-bred horses' fought, out the. finish for the leading position. Anan Louise (by Nassau—Mour'-sin Dream) and Affirm !by Nassau —Brayton) who came home in first and second places respectively, were both bred by Mr G. L. Stead. M hen a yearling, A.nan Louise was bought for 130gns. Anan Louise is a sister to Eerie, who won the Wanganui Steeplechase. Affirm is a brother to Tarloton, and half-brother to Bonnette.
The Wellington Post scribe, “Vedette.” states that Aucklanders who were at the Wanganui meeting will not hoar of Sir Boseoerry being beaten in the Great Northern Hurdles. As Sir Rosebcrry is now locked on in the north as more or less Auckland’s own. perhaps some allowance has to be made. For all that, good judges state that he is a fitter horse now r.lnn last year. It may be worth noting that Nippy, "'ho defeated a smart field in the Connelly Handicap, did not have much to spare from Sir Roseberry at the end of 11 furlongs on the flat at Whangarei only about a month ago. Nippy was giving Sir Rosebecrv Bl’o. An indication that Mr J. R. C’orteer., former owner of Heroic, purposes re-en-tering the Turf world as an owner is contained in the fact that there lies at the offices of the Victoria Racing Chib an
application by L. J. M|Cann (Caulfield trainer) for the registration of the imported horse Snowfire. Though racing officials were reticient for some reason about disclosing details, it is understood that M'Cann is acting on behalf of Mr Corteen, and that when registration for malities have been complied with the horse will race in Mr Corteen’s nomination (says a Melbourne writer). Snowfire is reported to be already in racing trim. In company with Prince Tressady he ran six furlongs in Imin 23sec at Caulfield recently, while in previous gallops he has recorded proportionately faster times over shorter distances. The horse, now a four-year-old, is the first foal of the Sundridge mare Bright, by Pommern, winner of the English Derby in 1915, which is in turn by that most successful sire Polymelus, which claims three of his sons as English Derby winners. Snowfire was bred by Mr .1. B. Joel, and was raced three times in Britain by Mr S. Joel. His first outing was in a Maiden ,Plate at Newmarket, where, ridden by F. Bullock, he ran ninth. Subsequently with S. Donoghue in the saddle ho ran third to Marksman Signal in the York Park Plate at Epsom, and later still ran fifth in the Riddlestown Plate, also run at Epsom. There is nothing in these performances to enthuse about, but the horse has impressed Caulfield track watchers as a good galloper, which is likely to win races if well placed. ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES. (Pee Unitej' Pbess Absociatiok.i AUCKLAND, May 27.. No. 3 grass track was open at Ellerslie this morning for fast work.
