RED CROSS SOCIETY.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Society, held on Monday, was attended by the Rev. V. G. Bryan King (chairman), Mrs George Roberts, Miss Williams, Miss Rattray. Miss Graham, Messrs E. A.Rosevear and C. B. Smith. The Chairman reported that the efforts put forth by the Society for the benefit of certain soldier patients were warmly endorsed by the medical superintendent. The society’s contribution in the work of getting the men back to health would prove invaluable. Members were gratified at this report. A satisfactory medical report was received in regard to patients recuperating in Central Otago. A change in the Central was undoubtedly a great benefit. A letter was received from the Patriotic Association concerning an ex-soldier in need of special treatment. It was resolved that the society take the matter in hand. A letter was received from the Otago Hospital Board conveying best thanks for clothing and various comforts supplied for the benefit of patients at Wakan Hospital. Miss Williams reported that an application for an outfit of clothing had been received from- a soldier in the country, a T.B. case. Outfit had been forwarded. It wasresolved that the action be confirmed. A letter was received from the recipient expressing grateful thanks. The Secretary reported that an application for assistance had been received on behalf of an ex-soldier who had been compelled to go into hospital on account of war wounds. The matter was being taken up by the Patriotic Association, to which the application had been referred.— Noted. Reports from headquarters, Wellington, showed that work of the Red Cross nurses in Taranaki and Canternury was being prosecuted with vigour. Great -interest was being shown in, and good work done by the home nursing classes, junior Red Cross Circles, and health lectures. A report from the Department of Health contained the following: “No report would be complete without mentioning the very great contribution made to the welfare of all patients by the activities of the Red Cross Society. During the past year we have been verv much indebted to them for their services.’’ Soldier patients in Dunedin and Wakari Hospitals have been regularly visited, and comforts dispensed tp them. Mrs Roberts stated that the men were very greatful, and always looked forward to the visits. The Matron at Montecillo reported that during the month five patients had been admitted, and six discharged. The number of patients in the Home at present is lb. Everything about the Home was proceeding satisfactorily. Greatful thanks were expressed for a number of gifts sent along for the benefit of the patients. Mr Rosevear, for the Montecillo Committee, confirmed the matron’s report, and together with Miss Williams and Miss Graham, referred in commendatory terms to the various activities about the home. Miss Graham reported in regard to the vocational- department. The men were working well, and were getting together a select stock of their handiwork in anticipation of ,the Winter Show. On tne motion of Mr Rosevear, seconded by Miss Rattray, the monthly financial statement was adopted, and a number of accounts passed for payment.
