THE DAYLIGHT LIMITED.

REQUEST FOR CONTINUANCE. DEPUTATION TO MR COATES. (Pbb United Pbess Association.) TAUMARUNUI, May 26. Replying to a deputation regarding the continuance of the Daylight Limited express, the Prime Minister said he was loth to cut out the train, but the department must be careful of expenditure. During the past year the department had paid off interest out of revenue, and had a balance of £25,000 or £30,000 to spare. How the department would get on this year he did not know. It was easy to dissipate large sums if care wore not taken. The fact that coal cost £1 per mile went to show how money slipped away. He admitted-that the Daylight Limited was a useful train, and if the department got sufficient passengers for it it would be kept running. At present there were insufficient passengers to make it pay.
