FIRES.

DWELLING HOUSE BURNED. PLUCKY RESCUE OF CHILDREN. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 6. Fire in a six-roomed house at Mount Roskill, owned and occupied by Thomas Stone, at 1 o’clock this morning resulted in three rooms being gutted. Two children, aged three and four years respectively, were asleep, when a neighbour, Mr R. H. Wood, crawled through the smoke to their bedroom, wrapped them in a sheet, and carried them safely to his home. HOTEL DESTROYED. OCCUPANTS’ NARROW ESCAPE. (Per United Press Association.) FEILDING, May 6. The hotel at Cheltenham, nine miles from Feilding, was totally destroyed by fire at 3 o’clock this morning. The occupants had a narrow escape, and nothing was -saved. The building was of 15 rooms, and was formerly owned by the Riddiford Estate The present owner’s name is not available. The licensee was Mr T Sim.
