DUMPING DUTY IN
CANADA
BUTTER AND CANNED FRUTTB AFFECTED. PROTESTS BY TRADERS. (Pres* Association—By Telegraph—Copyright} VANCOUVER, May 5. The newspaper, Daily Province of Wednesday, says: “Not only has the Government’ imposed a dumping duty of six cents per lb on all butter imported from Australia since the beginning of this year, but the announcement has just been made by Mr L. E. Taylor, president of the Horticultural Council of Canada, that a similar duty has been ordered on all canned peaches and apricots coming into Canada from the sister dominion. The reason for the duty is the same in each instance—namely, there is an export bonus of sis cents per lb on all butter, canned peaches, and apricots produced in Australia. Mr J. H. M'Donald, president of the British Columbia division of the Canadian Manufacturer/ Association, who toured the Antipodes with the Finance Minister (Mr Robb) at the time when the Australian Treaty was being negotiated, is quoted by the newspaper as saying: “The Government’s action in regard to the dumping duty on butter passing into Canada from Australia during the past few months seems designed to kill the effect of the preferential trade treaty just recently entered into. Would it not ho better for the Government to have issued a warning to our sister dominion that produce sold for export to Canada must lap at the same price as that sold for home consumption?”—A. and N.Z. Cable. LONDON, May 5. Mr A. P. Slade, the chief Vancouver importer of Australian and New Zealand butter, is protesting to the Government against the new dumping duty_ of six cents, which is to be retroactive till January 1. Vancouver importers are launching a trade protest throughout the dominion. Mr Slade states : “Fresh Australian and New Zealand butter was sold to the Canadians at a cent profit when home supplies were short, due to tbs heavy exports to Britain, thus saving the Canadians from high prices.” A million and a-half pounds is liable to the new duty.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
