LAWN TENNIS

NEW ZEALANDERS IN SYDNEY. A CREDITABLE DISPLAY. (Presi Association—By Telegraph —Copyright.) SYDNEY, April 9. (Received April 9, at 11 p.m. ) The first serious game in which the New Zealand lawn tennis representatives participated took place tc-day, when they met the New South Wales team, which except for the absence of Anderson, was the best available. The weather was ideal, there being no wind. The New Zealanders, although beaten, gave a creditable display, especially Wallace and Smyth who in the doubles beat Kahns and Willard, the strongest New South Wales combination. In the singles France and Andrews gained victories against Cummings and Peach respectively. Cummings appeared not to exert himself too much and France cleverlv placed the ball well away from him. The Wallace-Baker match proved the best singles exhibition. Baker’s backhand play was on the weak side, and Wallace took full advantage of this. Baker, however, used his long reach and gained many points at the net. Seay commenced well against Halms but tired in the second and third sets. Andrews, driving forcefully, kept Peach on the run. In the doubles the New Zealanders’ combination was not all it should he. This was doubtless due in large measure to a lack of practice owing to the recent wet weather. In the first set against Kalms and Willard, Wallace and Smyth kept to the back line, and consequently lost. In the second and third sets, they came forward to the net and volleyed their opponents strokes. The following are the scores, the names of the New South Wales men being given first; — SINGLES. North beat Wilson 6 —4, 7—5, Baker beat Wallace 6—4, 4—6, 6^—4. Cummings lost to France 4—6, 3—5. Willard beat Smyth 6—4, 6 —l. Peach (the State champion) lost to Andrews 2—6, 4—6.
