GAELIC SOCIETY.
The monthly meeting of the Gaelic Society was held last evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Stuart street. Chief M'Kenzie and Chieftains Roderick M'Kenzie and Thomas Ritchie occupied seats on the platform. Many Gaelic songs were sung during the evening, and needless to say they were greatly appreciated by all present. Mr Smith’s recitations were a feature of the evening’s entertainment, as were also the humorous stories told by Mr Chisholm. Chieftain Ritchie brought before the meeting the many points of interest to Highlanders and Scotsmen embodied In the Scottish New Zealander, a paper published in Auckland.
Chieftain R. M'Kenzie informed members of a smoke concert to be given by the Scottish societies as a farewell to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and asked as many as possible to be present. Bard Angus Cameron Robertson gave the first item, a Gaelic song, “Fear a bhata," and to an encore sang “M’nigheaml dim." and Mr Smith gave “The wee thing that jagged them a’,” and a number of recitations of his own composition. Mrs M'lvor sang a Gaelic song, “Eileann a fraseh," “Fall 11 o agus horo eile,” and others; and Piper George gave a stirring selection on the phiob-mor. Mrs Mathewson sang “Afton Water,” “Mary of Argyle”; and Mr Murdo M'Kenzie rendered “M’cailleach og” and “Anns a ghleann s’robh mi og.” Piper George Munro played the national music. Miss Davis played the accompaniments, and Mr M'Kenzie was the M.C.
