SYDNEY’S AQUARIUM.

A LONG-FELT WANT. ADJUNCT TO THE ZOO. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, January 22. The Sydney Zoo is acknowledged one of the finest institutions of its kind in the world. Visitors to Taronga Park cannot but admire the spiendid taste displayed in the general treatment of its unique and beautiful site; the skill with which each new section is brought in to preserve, and indeed, improve every natural feature. Iri only one respect can it be said that the zog has been wanting. That is in the direction of an up-to-date aquarium. It will not be long, however, betore this last omission is remedied. The trustees of Taronga Park announce that within 12 months Sydney will possess an aquarium which will be equal to that of any other country. Judging from the plans that have been prepared, the aquarium will prove as attractive and popular an adjunct of the Zoo as could be imagined. Here again the advantages of a magnificent site will be utilised to the full extent. The aquarium will be constructed adjacent to the harbour approach to the park. Galleries of tanks and a chainwork of ponds will be arranged in the gully which has been selected in such a manner that the natural beauties of the spot will be undisturbed. Another prime consideration is its proximity to the clear, temperate waters of the outer harbour. It will readily be understood, therefore, that the claim that almost any variety of marine life will be able to flourish without artificial aid in the Sydney Aquarium is by no means an extravagant one. It is agreeable to read that the trust has saved sufficient money from revenue to proceed with the undertaking, which will cost about £14,000, at once. The Government will be asked to grant assistance for its completion; and in view of the almost certain profitable return, apart from the great scientific value that must accrue from such an asset, it is unlikely that that assistance will be withheld.
