FANCIERS’ ASSOCIATION.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the South Island Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Association was held in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms on Thursday last, the president, Mr G-. E. Jeffreys (Christchurch), being in the chair, and the following delegates were present or represented societies by proxy: —Messrs T. A. Brown (Dunedin Fanciers), J. Tindall (Christchurch), T. S, Hanna (North Canterbury), W. Wright (Lyttelton), G. Bundy (Ashburton), A. W. V~. Stunner (Oamaru), E. Wheeler (Waknte). W. Brown Kaitangata), J. Calvert (Invercargill), A. W. Clapp (Nightcaps), G. Thompson (Dunedin Specialists’ Young Bird Club), J. Munyard (Tapanui), 13. J. Chrichouan (Christchurch Canary Club), W. J. Smart (New Zealand Utility Poultry Club), R, J. Brown (I>unedin Cage Bird Club). F. G. Hansen (Dunedin Utility Poultry Club), J. Hoare (Otago Bantam Club), T. 11. Dalton (Now Zealand Rhode Island Red Club), A. J. M‘Coll (Invercargill Bantam and Pigeon Club), B. C. Wilson (Timaru), P. Carolin (OtautauX, W. Esquilant (vice-president). The Chairman, in opening the meeting, expressed his pleasure in seeing such a good attendance of delegates. Mr T. S. Hanna (North Canterbury) stated that he competed for the Utility Black Orpington female championship at Waimate during the past show' season, and also for a special prize awarded to the champion. The judge awarded both prizes to his bird, but the secretary of the Waimate Show had advised him that owing to the necessary quorum of six competitors not competing, the certificate only was due to him. Mr Hanna produced the names of seven competitors who had exhibited. — It was decided to write to Waimate for a ful list of the competitors and also for an explanation why the special prize had not been forwarded. The South Canterbury Egg and Poultry Society and also the Otautau District and the Progressive League applied for affiliation to the association, and this was granted. The Otago Persian Cat Club forwarded its resignation, which was accepted. Correspondence was received ftom the New Zealand Poultry Association in connection with its annual conference, to bo hold in Dunedin in March, the letter being left in the hands of the executive to answer. The United Pigeon Fanciers’ Club, Christchurch, drew the attention of the conference to the fact that it was unfair to allow the self-coloured tumblers to compete with broken feathered tumblers for shields and other prizes as the awards in all cases are won by the “seifs.” The suggestion was favourably received, and consideration is to be given to it when alloting trophies under the association’s control. The annual report stated that 31 dubs were affiliated to the association, and of that number 22 held public shows. Nightcaps—a new society affiliated at the last annual meeting—held its first show in May last, and the result gave promise of greater success in 1926. During the past show season com. petition for the 100 championships offered by the association, was very keen, for of that number 82 champforf certificates were won, and in the near future there was no doubt that in the majority of breeds a full quorum would 'bo benciied for championship honours. The Victory Rhield was competed for at Nightcaps Show, and was won by Mr T. Robertson with first and third in utility white leghorn‘pullets. The committee regretted having to record that Mr Robertson died shortly after the show. The Nightcaps Society was holding the shield in the meantime.* The art union for 1925 was supported by 18 clubs and had it not been for the very wet weather right through the show season, the credit balance of £32 19s Kkl would have been greatly increased.' Only £ll 11s being won outright, a balance ot £35 was at the disposal of the association for further art union championships if desired. The balance sheet, presented for adoption showed receipts as £335 Is sd, including balance carried forward. The expenditure was £l6O 11s 2d, leaving a credit balance ot £m 10s 3d. During (ho past year three prominent poultiymen have passed away in the persons of Mr J. Jarvis, late president of the North Island Poultry Association for a long term of years, also a vice-president of the association, Mr S. H. Scott, of Avondale, Auckland, one of the leading utility breeders of that city, and Mr Robert Boswell, of' Christchurch, a founder of the Christchurch Club, ilo had exhibited at the Christchurch show for 58 years in succession, and this established a record which will be hard to beat. To the relatives of the above, the council wished to extend its sincere sympathy. The association’s thanks were due to the Christchurch club , for placing its club rooms at the counciTs disposal, for its meetings during the past year, to Mr V. Bedwell, the honorary auditor for auditing the accounts, to the 'press for space given in reporting the shows, and the secretaries of the affiliated clubs for assisting the council in helping to attend promptly to the association’s business. The Christchurch Club’s delegate moved a remit—“ That the Government be approached to ascertain if better facilities could be made for the cartage of eggs for hatching purposes. This remit was left in the hands of the executive. It was also decided to approach the Government in regard to the present charges made to homer flying clubs on their birds in connection with flying races. The Oamaru Club's remit that a visiting fanciers’ cup he allotted for competition by the association was referred back to Oamaru for further details.
