CITY COUNCIL REPORTS
The following are extracts from tho various committee reports to bo submitted to the City Council on Wednesday next: PUBLIC WORKS AND WATER COMMITTEE. The Works Committee will submit the following recommendations; — Ocean Beach Railway.—That the application from the Now Zealand Railway Department for permission to make a connection from the Ocean Beach Railway to the adjoining' area recently acquired by the Railway Department for a shunting yard bo granted. A plan is laid on tno table showing tire proposed shunting yard and the nature of the connection applied for. By agreement with the council the Railway Department has the privilege of using 60 wagon lengths of the Ocean Reach railway and of maintaining it during the currency of the agreement. The committee will report as follows: Tainui Streets.—Authority has been granted to proceed with the work of metalline the undermentioned streets in Tainui with metal obtained from streets which are being asphalted this season viz., Lochend, Ravelston, Gilfillan, Botha, Magdala Crest, Cavell. Granley streets, and Tainui road—total length 32,000 cubic yards. These roadways have already been pitched. The metalling now to bo done will be for a width of 20ft. An amount of £560 has been provided in the loan allocations for the work. . , King Street Bridge.—An inspection ot tho bridge over the Water of Leith m King street discloses that the centre pier has been undermined for a length of about 10ft, and that tho pitched invert has been scoured out. The engineer has accordingly been authorised to act in the matter ot effecting- necessary repairs. Tar Sealing Harrow Street.—The city engineer has been instructed to tar seal that portion of Harrow street between Albany street and Hanover street at an estimated cost of £2OO. The expenditure will be paid wit of the unspent balance of tho spocaal voto of £IOOO for north-end streets recently authorised by the council. Instructions have bee r given to record the undernoted matters for consideration with the allocations for next financial year: (a) The construction of K. and G. along the eastern side of Helensburgh road from. Hood street to the zig-zag at an estimated cost of £BO. (b) The metalling of and provision of a light in Spiers road at an estimated cost of £l7. (c) Iho erection ot four additional lights in Taien road between Tyne street and tho car term inns at Nairn street at an estimated cost ol £l9. Id) The moving of one light and the erection of one additional light m barley street at an estimated cost of -Mj MS. (el Improvements to the footway on .no western ti'de of Tyne street—estimated cost £250. , , Payments.—Paysheets and accounts amounting to the. sum of £20,109 4s 2d have boen recommended to the Finance Committec for payment. TRADING COMMITTEE. Tho Electric Power and Lighting Section of the Trading Committee recommends that Rio draft agreement laid on the table between the Council and the New Zealand Workers’ Union (Otago and Southland Branch) covering wages and working com ditiona of general labourers at VV aipon Falls for a further period of one year be approved, and authority granted to execute tho agreement on Doha-lf of tho Oouncii. The only alternation of importance in the agreement provides for an advance m the weekly rate from £4 to £4 4s, and an increase in the rat© for casuals from Is y-M to Is lOd per hour. The country allowance of 12s nor week remains as at present. Tho committee will report as follows: Transformer Oil.—Tho quotation of the Vacuum Oil Co. in tho sum of 2s 9d per gallon f.o.r. Dunedin for the supply ana delivery of transformer oil required by the department has been accepted. Payments: Paysheets and accounts amounting to the sum of £19,719 3a lid have been recommended to the Finance Committee for payment. The Tramway section reports that paysheets and accounts amounting to the sum of £22,418 4s 8d have been recommended to the Finance Committee for payment. The Gas Section will present the following recommendations: —Workshop Machine Tools —Thai authority be granted to purchase a shaping and planing machine for the gasworks workshop. At present the workshop is not adequately provided with necessary machine tools, and the maduno now proposed to b© puicbiased is a necessity if the work is to be economically and efficiently carried on. Tenders for Scrap M.ctal. —That the tender of Mr Charles Black of the sum of £ls for 180 old gas lanterns now lying at the Oaversbam Gasworks, and £5 5s per ton for cast iron scrap lying at tho city works, be accepted.
