NEW ZEALANDERS IN AUSTRALIA. THE TOUR REVIEWED. TEAM RETURNING. fPrew Association— By Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, January 14. Mr Peake, manager of the New Zealand cricket team, in reviewing the tour, said that the team showed wonderful improvement as the result of its experience in Australia. He bad been complimented by some of the oldest and best-knewu cricketers on the dashing display of his men. He paid a tribute to the hospitality shown to the team at all the places visited. . Although the tour was not a success financially, it had been a great success from the players’ point of view. Oliver heads the batting averages with 52.7. He is followed by Dacre with 50.2. Eight others secured averages of over 30. The bowling averages have not yet been compiled. Mr Peake expressed the greatest pleasure at the conduct of the team both on and off the field. Allcott, Caere, and Gillespie sail by the Niagara to-day, and the remainder of the team by the Maunganui to-morrow. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH. HEAVY SCORING. SYDNEY, January 14. (Received Jan. 14, at 11.35 p.m.) In the Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and New South Wales the former in their first innings made 475. (Grimmett 32,A. Richardson 153). Andrews took 3 wickets for 34, Kelleway 2 for 83, and Macartney 2 for, 83. New South Wales in thedr second innings have lost three wickets for 294 runs. (Collins 84, Macartney 113, Kippax, not out, 41, Kelleiway, not. out, 35). . . The weather was fine and the wicket good. The South Australian batsmen vig- . orously atacked the bowling in a successful effort to avoid a follow on. Macartney played at the top of his form and gave a fine display. In his partnership with Collins he rattled the score along 'at a great rate. Collins was much slower, but played a careful and sound innings. A FINE BATSMAN. ALEXANDER THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PRAISED. All the newspapers pay a tribute to the young South Australian, Alexander, whom "they describe as a fine batsman, and the best colt who has come forward for many years. Some describe him as a second Victor Trumper, and predict a great future for him if early promise is fulfilled.
