GENERAL NEWS.

The Executive of the local branch of the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society met on Monday night, the vice-president and treasurer (Mr C. E. Beckingsal© occupying the chair. It was reported that during two months only £7 12s had come in, of which the North-East Valley Presbyterian Church had contributed £2 2s and Knox Church £5. The treasurer called attention to the fact that the balance in hand was insufficient to meet current expenses and that steps must be taken to increase the revenue. The hope was expressed that the announcement of the need would elicit voluntary contributions in aid of the good work which the society carries on. It was feared that the shipping strike had alienated much sympathy from the seamen tnat some who had formerly rendered financial assistance were now withholding their gifts. Yet it seemed unfair to hamper the beneficent efforts of the society which ministered impartially to all seamen who frequent the Rests, and provided for their entertainment as well as for their spiritual needs The meeting of the Rescue Lodge (No. 105) International Order of Good Templars, was held on Tuesday ; n the Oddfellows’ Hall. King Edward street, Bro. W. H. Rennie, Chief Templar, presiding. Reports of the picnic held on Labour Day, and in reference to the children’s demonstration on Saturday, were received. The election of officers for the new term resulted as follows;—Chief Templar, Bro. W. Rennie; Vice-Templar, Sister Violet Dray; Secretary, Bro. J. A. Kinch; Treasurer, Bro. Jas. Hilton; Financial Secretary, Sister Lily Baird; Marshal, Bro. M. Anderson; Chaplain, Sister M. Smith; Guard, Bro. R. Leathley! Sentinel, Bro. E. lies; Organist, Sister Mrs Pauli; the installation to take place on November 10. Arrangements were made for the holding of a temperance rally in South Dunedin Town Hall on Sun. day next after church.
